Is that what gang life really was like back then in NYC?

Post by Swan Owns All »

i guess only some of the older members would know that were alive back in the late 70's/early80's.....I mean tons of different gangs with matching outfits and flashy looking colors. it seems today that there are few gangs around besides bloods and Crips.
Did gangs just rumble like in the movie? when did gangs start getting into guns too and get away from hand to hand fighting?
You Warriors are good, real good.....The Best

O well is it against the rules to atleast see a pic of what a real life gang looked like back then.

Let me get this right. We all love this film about gangs, yet we are not allowed to discuss............gangs!!!!
Erm isnt that a bit twisted,ok,i can understand not mentioning names, but is anyone reading about it going to run off and do something stupid??? Come on!!!!
I for one would love to hear SoldierHeavyMuscle's tales of wild youth and i am sure a lot more would too.I could also recall some 'colourful' days as a teenager in Birmingham England with a wild mix of rockers, skinheads, punks, rude boys, mods. Colourful tribes, coming into conflict etc, great days,I kind of think thats why 2 old fogies like soldier and myself are on a site like this....its a reminder of our youth, the struggles but also the great friendships and laughs, carefree and nothing to do but have fun, before mortgages and rugrats kicked in. So..........lets lighten up shall we, can't discuss gangs???????
Get real. What the hell are we all doing anyway?

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! back then, (70s) gangs were REAL men..with fighting with their fists and chains, etc.
todays gangs are lame..somebody gives them a hard time, or rival gang member they just shoot 'em.

"Some Man You Are!"

i remember well..heading into the city, and seeing gang names on walls, subways, subway cars and at the time there was no "hip hop" crap or "rap" music..just rock n roll baby!
seems to me now, gangs are more inspired by the "gangsta" image and hip hop and rap dont help matters.
gangs back then seemed more original and unique. "Nine Guys, No Weapons".
im sure a real gang member from the 60s,70s, early 80s could kick the crap on these wannabe gang members today..no guns..hide behind their guns..."I Told Yah.. There  a Bunch Of Wimps"

thats why a remake of the classic WARRIORS wouldnt work today...maybe it would if they make it take place in the 50s,60s,70s...when men were men! 8)

Well there seems to always be a conflict between todays generation and yesteryears generation.  You see it is inevitable for things to change.  A philosopher by the name of Heraclitus said "you can never step into the same river twice".  Every generation has their own issues, and goals that they deal with, its just that has the years go by, these hassels  take on new forms, and obstacles that make peoples beliefs different.  Since the dawn of time, there were gangs forming in some way or another.  I mean if you think about, look at the drawings that the cavemen put up on walls.  It was like graffiti represeting their tribe(gang).  Whether it was for religious, racial, or new world order purposes, gangs will always be forming.  You see the reason things have changed, is because the government changed.  Therefore if the government changes, that leaves people with new obstacles to face.  The issues of the 50's, 60's, and 70's, are way different from todays obstacles.  I am not saying I am sticking up for todays generation, because altough I do not condone gangs, they were more honorable back in the day.  Gangs were considered the armies of the night, because they dealt with their own world, and whatever battles, or treaties they had, it was only amongst them.  That why we like the warriors, because back than it was a time were civilians walked amongst themselves, and the soldiers stuck within their own realm.  My point is, the economic, racial, and religious problems are not the same as the issues of the past.  So therefore the new armies of the night have to keep the same fighting spirit of past gangs, but alter their lifestyles to deal with the "now".  I just disagree, how the gangs of todays, get us innocent civilians mixed in the action, with no honor.  But all in all, the original legacy of gangs will always be their.  That is something that will never change.
