Apocalypto

Post by CompanyScum »

Consist of spoilers, this is the warning.

Well...

This movie was very... interesting. To start off, the gore was amazingly done, it wasn't exaggerated like blood splashing every where when an arm gets cut off. For example, a man gets a part of his head chipped off and the brain is somewhat visible, small amounts of blood would spurt out over time and pus came out, it was sick yet nicely done. Also, the fight sequences are awesome, you get the feel of the hatred from the characters when they are consumed by revenge in their confrontation. This is by far, the greatest cinematography I've ever seen, in my opinion of course.

The way they portray the Mayans is pretty sick, they would enslave the people in the small villages around their capital or whatever. However, the way they are treated and shown is just too much but it does a good job at showing the brutality historically, however, my logic may be flawed as my history memory is kinda blurry. In addition, the way they show the Mayans making the pyramids is a bit flawed, because from my knowledge from history, no one knew how they built the pyramids, they show it by the Aztecs using the slaves.  Keep in mind, this is from what I learned in history classes, so my logic may be utterly or kind of flawed

The way the Mayans are portrayed figure-wise is really spectacular, the make up, costumes, piercings, etc. are breath-taking, scary, intimidating, and awesome.

Also, it is sad in many ways. The ways the Mayans treat the "neutral" Mayans is quite sad, after they are done pillaging and fighting them they eventually make the neutral Mayans submit and tie them down, to enslave the women and men. They leave behind the dying and children (from all of the neutral villages), but allow the children to follow from a distance, only to bring them to an area where they can no longer, a river with a strong and deep current, you just see the children crying and say they will take care of each other while the good Mayans look behind in tears. Additionally, while the good Mayans are escorted by the bad Mayans to their "capital" you see what the enslaved people go through, from dying, diseases, coughing up blood, abnormalities, begging, and even the sacrifices.

Though, historically flawed, this is a definite favorite of mine, Mel Gibson really did a good job in my opinion. This may save is career :D

Also, I'm looking forward for Pathfinder, Children of Men, and 300. I also, saw a poster for TMNT, just a poster, no preview.

I am gonna see this movie today.  The history of these tribes are spectacular, their culture was amazing.  The Aztecs, Toltecs, Mayans, etc.  They were pretty advanced for their time.  By the time the Spanish got to Mexico (circa 1545), the city of Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) had over 500,000 habitants, making it the biggest city of the Americas at that time.  I have always been interested in these kind of films.  Don't care for Mel Gibson as an actor (except Mad Max) but as director he can pull it off!

Mayans were one of those cultures, similar to the Babylonians or those on Crete that had no violence in their artwork. The scene where the sacrifice-ees walk through the tunnel and see pics of people getting butchered is completely false. the whole scene was drenched in bias but i enjoyed the sheisty glances between the king and the high priest, as if they are fooling the entire civilization.

not that accurate and two things at the end really kill the movie, but as an action piece its great and this is predator-status jungle cinematography. this movie is GREEN.

Yes it was a very beautiful culture.  I like the details of how they lived.  It was not some made up film that stereotyped the Mayans.  It shed some light on what this culture really represented.  And that they were really a race to be proud of.
