Were The Warriors "well known?"

I was wondering just how "well known" The Warriors were after all, according to various things in the film.

For instance when the leader of the Riffs asks, "who are The Warriors?" that would obviously seem to say he has never heard of them.

But when the Riffs "sent the word" to the radio DJ for the dedication, she refers to The Warriors' home turf, Coney, and teases them with "...all the way back to Coney." So someone within the Riffs' probably had to pass that known info to her.

The Lizzie talking to Vermin about how they heard of the Warriors, a "heavy outfit, sure we know about you guys" seems to be true even though she's just trying to help lure him, Rembrandt and Cochise into their headquarters. Vermin's rsponse of "yeah, I guess we are pretty well known" seems to be sincere, although so does when he asks "how'd you hear about us?" just seconds earlier.

Luthor seems to know who they are whenever he mentions them in the film, although that's just a guess on my part.

Of course, not in the film but in the trailer, Mercy says, "Warriors? You guys are the big dudes, huh?" but that can either mean she has heard of them and their rep, or maybe she heard they "killed" Cyrus so that's what she meant by "the big dudes," the guys in trouble on the run.

Good question. Firstly, I don't think Luther knew who the Warriors were until he blamed them for killing Cyrus, because if you notice, he appears to read the back of Cleon's vest before he points the finger at him, as though The Warriors is a new name to him.

And as for the Lizzies, I think the most telling line is when one of them says 'so you're the famous Warriors, the guys that shot Cyrus', this suggests that they only know about them because they were accused of shooting Cyrus.

And Masai obviously didn't know who the Warriors were, but maybe Cyrus did. Surely someone high up in the Riffs knew about them, or they wouldn't have been invited to the big meeting.

I don't think the Warriors were that well known because of where they reside, Coney's at the end of the line and kinda detached from the battlefield. Saying that though, the Warriors seem to know quite a bit about the other gangs, Snow identifies the Turnballs and Fox even identifies the Orphans, who aren't even on the network. But even if the Warriors weren't that well known, one thing's for sure, after that night, everyone knew about them.

Heres a easier way to do this.

Theres over a Hundred Large gangs. Many form for attention or pride or whatever there cause is then you get the warriors. A family of 120 or more
this would consider them a large gang but if the warriors were in a chart of which gang would be well known then they would be like #4 tops.

But this would be after cyrus was killed

Maybe vermin was making sound like his gang was better I mean when around (I hate to say this of the lizzies )but beatiful ladys you want to impress them right? So say your with a hot group. But you may be right they could be a mid sized well rounded gang

Im not really sure if the warriors are well known or not, seeing as the riff leader had never heard of them, thats a pretty big deal, seeing as the riffs are the biggest gang in the city. But when the lizzy says to vermin that she knows who they are, thats b.s, she was just trying to get vermin into the house, she obviously heard the bulliten over the radio. But the rogues did know who they were, and alot of otehr gangs did to, so its a tough call.

This is something I?ve wondered about, too, so I?m glad to have found this thread.  I think that the Warriors may not be as well known as some of the other gangs, mainly because of their location so far out.  However, they have enough status to be invited to the conclave, unlike the Orphans.

When Masai says, ?Who are The Warriors??  I think that it?s rhetorical.  He doesn?t expect, and doesn?t get an answer from anyone.  He knows all about them.

The whole tone of the episode with the Lizzies suggests to me that they had not heard of the Warriors until they hear the radio messages.  They flatter the guys to lure them into their trap, and, to my ears anyway, Vermin?s response carries a hint that he is slightly surprised, but pleased, to hear the Warriors have such a reputation.

Luther picks on the Warriors out of opportunism, when he sees the name on Cleon?s back.  He knows that a Warrior has seen him shoot Cyrus.  Can?t tell if he knew much about them before that.

This is mostly just impressions.  Be interesting to see if anyone picks up any more clues.

I think the Warriors were a sort of "medium" known gang. For Masai to not know the warriors isn't really that important in my opinion. Obviously the Riffs had their own scout and memory man to identify them and their turf.

They were obviously known enough to be invited to the meeting, which is probably saying something because Cyrus says "you are standing here with 9 representatives from over a hundred gangs, and theres over a hundred more" meaning that had The Warriors not been at least sort of well known they would have been one of the other hundred gangs that weren't even invited. This line alone, said by Cyrus, leads me ot believe that The Warriors, as a whole were pretty well known.

Think of all the gangs in the city, each with their own gang wars and rivalries, not knowing about all the others doesn't really strike me as odd.

Regardless if the warriors were well known or not, I believe there is one thing in this life that somebody accomplishes to leave their legacy.  Who knows what the warriors did to get recognition.  After all they run Coney Island.  Maybe they have rival gangs, but their still standing strong.  I always believed that the warriors represented the theme of the underdog.  Cleon was the type of guy, who does not pick you on how strong you are, or your racial background, but on how well you can contribute.  The more different the gang becomes the more you can contribute.  Therefor there probably known for their smartness and fighting skills.  i am sure that the "big meeting" was not the warriors first adventure.  Maybe one night they were on a journey that made them come face to face with their fears.  A journey that put them in a fest pool of hell and darkness.  Maybe one night the warriors achieved the impossible, which made them the men that they are portrade in the film.  But that is another story.  Another story that made the warriors who they are, and what makes them so special.  This is why they were able to stay strong, its the level of uniqueness that they have.
