reading the book

Well I picked up the book yesterday and its pretty good although i have a few gripes about it.

Its written pretty good and it has some good points to it. You can definitely pick out the impact it had on the movie. One thing that is bugging me is that I cant identify with the characters.  I mean, they're young killers basically. I still cant get over how they killed that man just because they looked at him the wrong way. I'm almost hoping that they all get busted or racked up. The sex scenes are very descriptive kinda making it seem like and independent film almost. One thing i hated was the prelude, he put spoilers in it and that was stupid, but i mean he used basically every word that i didn't know, and his life sounds very boring.. i think he was just trying to sound smart. He also went on about how much he hated the movie, but why would he be complaining? I'm sure hes a millionare now, and its dumb luck his book got found by Larry Gordon in the first place. One thing that made me smile, was that he mentioned "theres even an on-line site dedicated to it!" He He, thanks Sol.  Anyways, I thought it was interesting how Hinton played the sheriff arcade game, considering it makes a brief cameo in the movie. And it was interesting to see the gang that was an equivalent to the orphans, The Beliquent Blazers or something like that. Anyhoo, if you're up for an interesting (but adult) read, i recommend this book. Its not the best, but its nice to add to your Warriors collection.

I'm also 13 and from Canada and I've been looking for it for a long time

its obviously not at my public library and I can't check out a book store for adults.

I was personally quite disappointed by the book. But thats probably because I saw the movie first. I though the book was written to kind of show how bad socity was and not actually for action packed entertainment. Even the way the group is organised is different from the film, the way they call therselves 'The Family' and have positions such as Fathter, Uncle, Child, etc, I found that kind of wierd. I never liked the way 'Arnold' (most likely the Cleon of the book0 actually makes it home after taking a beating at the meeting.The setting also seemed very different to me, even though I tried to picture it like the movie I was always just getting a different picture in my head. Sorry for any spoilers in here too lol.

The book was poorly written.  Sol's intro is essentially an apology.  He definitely had insight into gangs and the whole social phenomenon surrounding the dark side of the New York scene at the time but he falls short in many areas. 

Did he actually walk through an NY subway tunnel alone?  Doubtful.  He immediately identifies with a single character - Hinton.  I hate Hinton.  I pictured him as Rembrandt "with attitude". 

The novel was great in the lead up to the meeting but as soon as everyone took off it fell apart.  It felt like he wanted to end it but had to stretch it out to 181 pages to make a point. 

I never quite got what is was.

And I dont like how he jumps into the minds of different people, seems kinda random.

Not to sound racist, but you have to keep telling yourself that these kids are black (after seeing the movie its hard! lol)

Firstly congratulations to Middleman for becoming a Warrior, well done. ANd secondly I agree with what you guys just said. I never quite got the point of the part when Hinton is in Broadway himself either. That was pretty wierd, and I never liked the rape scenes that much. It just doesnt seem like the Warriors after seeing the movie (Even thuogh they're the 'Coney Island Dominators' in the book) It was kinda off putting.

The other thing that bothered me was when Hinton was wandering around eating.  Exactly how many pounds of food did this kid consume in an hour or so of time?  How much cash did he have on him? 

Also, the scene in the bathroom with the prostitute was just strange.

I thought pretty much the whole book was strange, especially that scene. It just didnt seem like they were a real street gang. There was too much, I dont know, tradition and things I guess. I just felt it wasnt very 'gang like'

I just finished the book and can say that Sol Yurick is an interesting writer.  I like his use of vocabulary a lot.  The story reads smoothly for the most part.  There were some drawn out sections dwelling too much on insignificant detail.  But overall I feel the script for the movie is a better, tighter story.

Lotta people get shocked when they change things but overall the screenplay flows better in my opinion.  The punks in the book were vicious a-holes with no charisma and the movie fixed that too.

personally i liked the book to me it felt like a brand new story i mean the gangs name is even diffrent! i just finished it tonight and liked it alot. the best part is Hinton(rembrandt) unlike the movie where he is portrayed as a wimp, in the book he is the smartest and turns out to be the won to lead them home. it kinda sucks that only 3 made it home not including arnold. but in all the morale is don't rape women you'll get booked

mate I loved this book, I think it is better then the film. It goes into more detail within the way they get home I read it with 2 days I was hooked and I'm glad I brought it and advice anyone to read it. Better then the film by far. Even though I still love this film.

The book was like purgatory to me, wasn't good but it wasn't bad. it didnt have any real effect on me like the movie did though, which was kinda dissapointing i suppose. it's really disturbing in some places, like the killing of that guy who looked at them the wrong way, i doubt a bunch of new york kids would have just murdered him like that(even if they are from new york!!).

all in all it was kinda dissapointing but, hell, at least it inspired the greatest flick of all time.

Mate that is a reality of what they did to that guy, the place where I live kids do that attack you if you give them a bad look ok not going far as to kill you but think of the situation the kids are in there young, poor and no one in the world cares for them, and its all about REP and the kids wanted to make sure they where heard of after they left that turf. And the book was wrote in the late 1960's and times back then are different to now, it was properly bad back then with all the sex and drugs.
