Foreign and Dark Films

Any of you guys watch foreign or dark films? Here in the U.S. we don't get the chance to see some of the films from overseas, due to their content (:?:) :-s :-k. Anyways, feel free to recommend any films.

Yes that is exactly what non-american films are like. 

Well what is native to me is foreign to you, so I'll reccomend you some Swedish films.

Ondskan (The Evil) - An excelent film based on the book by Jan Guillo. Erik is expelled from school for fighting. He ends up at a private boarding school where the senior students control the young ones. Erik finds a friend in Pierre, his room mate. The story revolves around Erik who just wishes to be left alone and graduate. He doesn't listen to what the seniors have to say and they don't like it. There are these ritualistic fights that the older students force upont he younger and some get quite brutal. It's a great film and shouldn't be missed. It was even nominated for an oscar.

Det Okända (The unknown) - A movie about some scientists or biologists who travel to the north of Sweden to investigate a forest fire. When there they discover a strange...creature. As time goes on some of the people get posessed and things get creepy. I saw it a few years back and it was quite a dark film. It's definately inspired by The Blair Which Project, except it's not just 3 teens running around in the dark screaming for 2 hours. Good movie with a cool ending.

Beck 2: Spår i mörker (Beck 2 - traces in darkness) - Now this is an awesome film! Part of the great Beck series and my favorite. A serial killer is loose and is terrorising the Stockholm subways at night by decapitating them. The way in which he strikes is really creepy. He shuts off the power and wears night vision goggles to navigate through the pitch black. The twist is that we see it through his eyes as he sneaks up on his terrified victims.

Another good one:

Battle Royale - A Japanese film set in the near future where in order to teach discipline and respect a random class of students is chosen, sent to an island, given weapons and forced to kill each other until only one remains. A bit of a modern classic and overall very kick ass.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Oh once I gave this movie the chance to grow on me I really liked it. At first I found it a bit slow and repetative but after a second viewing it all flowed much better. Good movie.

Speaking of South American films, City Of God is a very good film as well.

Also since Amelie was mentioned, A Very Long Engagement, while it lacked the charm of Amelie it was still pretty good and has some cool war scenes too.

A Very Long Engagement was good, I can't exactyl remmeber if All Quiet on the Western Front was in German or not when I saw it, there probably exist many versions...also Tae Guk Gi is must see.
