In The City lyrics

Post by wonderwheel »

I was just looking at the lyrics of "In The City" by Joe Walsh and although I have heard the song many times over, I never truly looked at the words. I just found it so fitting to the film and especially the look on Swan's face when the Warriors arrive at Stillwell Ave.

Somewhere out there on that horizon
Out beyond the neon lights
I know there must be somethin? better
But there?s nowhere else in sight
It?s survival in the city
When you live from day to day
City streets don?t have much pity
When you?re down, that?s where you?ll stay
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city

I was born here in the city
With my back against the wall
Nothing grows, and life ain?t very pretty
No one?s there to catch you when you fall
Somewhere out on that horizon
Faraway from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin? better
And I can?t stay another night
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city

adios,

Axl would do an amazing job at this song! his diverse vocal styles and" wooooo wooo woooos" would go quite well, i think. but i really liked his cover of "look at your game girl".  too bad he's still in his own little axl rose universe....

An eighteen year old Axl would bring an amazing effect to many songs but these days...Good Luck

I would love to see this song performed with an acoustic guitar.

adios,
when i was a teenager, i used to think of this song a lot.
there was a big, big, park, about a block and a half from my house.
it was new, (the neighborhood's "every 5 year attempt" at "cleaning up")
but it was already desroyed.
it was our park, in our neighborhood, and yeah it was all tagged up, but it was our taggs.
and i wont lie, there was everything you can think of in that park!
garbage, drug paraphenalia, broken bottles, bricks, you name it!

and right in the middle of it was a great big rocket slide, fort, ladder, ropes, kinda thingy!! LOL
but it was really high, about 35, 40 feet at the top.
and the top was all enclosed, and there were like 3 different slides, and a little catwalk, inside the enclosure at the top.
people used to go up there and party, what ever!!
well, to get to the top, ya had to climb a ladder that was inside a real tight tube, that went straight up the center, of the structure, and it was really narrow!!
well, the tube smelled HORRIBLE!!!
the bums, used to pea in it, and everything else.

but, if you could brave the smell, and made it to the top, when ya came out of the tube, you could sit at the top of the slides, and see the WHOLE neighborhood!!!
in all it's dirty, glory!!! LOLOL
i used to go up there and sit by myself, and i would always have that song running through my head!
and always thought of that scene.
and even though it pretty much looked the same as in the movie, dirty, nasty, cold, heartless, hopeless, it was still kind of peaceful, almost serene, looking at it from up there.

well, thats my little way of remembering this song!  ;)

Tried to give the devil my soul...
She said i had nothing to bargain with...

Really enjoyed your post SHM. I think it shows alot of creativity to take a situation such as a dirty park and turn it into your own sanctuary. I believe the song is all about survival and being able to overcome obstacles that are put forth especially for a person who is struggling to get along in a big city jammed with so many people. I for one have lived in the U.S and Canada which is where I am from, but have never lived for very long in a large city. I could only imagine that it would not be easy at times being surrounded by so much especially at those times when a person does not feel like much in this all too big world. I love this song and it's way of making you see the perspective of the urban jungles.
