Yes, MB born in Memphis, cause it was the closest hospital to his Arkansas home town. Went to High School there too for the same reason. Went to College in Miss. though and now lives in Cal. His Arkansas family's last name is NOT Beck. And I don't know how often he goes back there, so the chances are pretty slim, unless you get to one of those big celebrity autograph signings they have, and he participates in sometimes.

I thought Vermin and Cleon had the most Brooklynesque accents. I never thought Swan was off or anything, but I wouldn't peg him as a native of Brooklyn based on his voice. Rembrandt and Fox were also clearly New Yorkers.

see, that reminds me again, why i i dentify with this movie.emissary wrote:I thought Vermin and Cleon had the most Brooklynesque accents. I never thought Swan was off or anything, but I wouldn't peg him as a native of Brooklyn based on his voice. Rembrandt and Fox were also clearly New Yorkers.
those of you who live, or have ever lived in "the city" (whatever city) might identify with this. (if you didn't live in a pretty much, "one race" neighborhood.)
i remember there were black kids, white kids, mexican kids, oriental kids, "redneck" kids, (LOL) guatemalan, columbian, you name it!
there was even a gypsy, family in the neighborhood! (they were mean!!)
ya know? a lot of different backgrounds
that's why the warriors, the gang, always felt kinda real to me.
it reminded me of my neighborhood, when i was kid.

He's not Vincent Laguardia Gambini or anything but there are some spots where it comes through: "This is a graveyard" "Hey, wait for me!"vermin76 wrote:emissary wrote:I thought Vermin and Cleon had the most Brooklynesque accents. plus I remember watching him in the Bloodhound Gang.

Actually he did live in NY---but when he graduated college, he lived/studied drama, in England for 5 years, and perfected his British accent first---left all traces of his southern drawl behind--and got so his family was wondering about him!vermin76 wrote:to say he was born in tennesse i thought he made his accent sound like he,d been in new york all his life.it was a nice piece of acting on his behalf.

I have read he feels that Xanadu closed doors for him that Warriors had opened. But what was the background of his character in Xanadu?

Actually he said that his Sonny Malone in Xanadu was very close to the way he was in real life, the character did not give him much to hide behind, but there were so many scripts and production changes that is was hard to keep up with. they changed choreographers, directors, and made script rewrites while filming the scenes that same day.
His character was an artist, drawing big record cover posters for displays.
and he hated that he could only paint it how it was released and had no creative input---till the magical muse(Olivia N.John) came into his life.
He was trying to be independent, ended up having to come back to work for the record label again so as not to starve, and then when he meets her ON roller skates no less--she gives him the inspiration to expand his horizons through a mentor (Gene Kelly)
IT has moments of total fantasy and some Don Bueth(spelling wrong) animation for a romantic musical number--that some loved with a passion, and some hated even more. the music is good, as far it goes, they don't let Sonny sing(damn) cause I have heard he can!! But is a total vehicle for OL.N. John, and they were trying to capture the afterfall from Grease with it, but it was too tame, and there were so many others same sames coming out, it more or less got panned BIG TIME!! The costuming was awful!
BUT there are people out there who are just as crazy about this movie as there are fans like us of the Warriors---so even after 25 years---it is considered a cult classic too. ANd they have gatherings, and signings, and film showings like at the Alamo drive In Theater in Houston TX. Where they got Michael and few others that were in it to come and answer questions, sign autographs, and he even took a turn around the rink on skates.
