why does ajax have to get arrested???

There's something interesting about the way the story is set up during the 5-10 minutes following the end of the Furies fight. On one hand we have Swan, Ajax, Cowboy and Snow heading through the park to 96th Street. On the other we have Rembrandt, Cochise and Vermin at Union Square meeting the Lizzies.

Ajax takes a fancy to the cop and then later pays the price for not focusing on getting back to Coney. The same thing applies to Cochise and Vermin in the Lizzies' hangout. The idea being that if you get sidetracked you will lose the fight. This is why Swan repels Mercy throughout the course of the film, and why Rembrandt doesn't go for any of the Lizzies. They know their priorities and can't get sidetracked.

Basically, a theme that occurs from time to time in subculture movies is that of intrusions from outsider women which tear the group apart(especially evident in an Australian film called Romper Stomper). This is a strong theme for any gang movie and if any movie was going to tackle numerous subculture themes, it had to be Warriors. Of course, they had three potential characters to choose from to throw away - Cochise, Vermin and Ajax. Since Ajax was always set up as a dislikeable, arrogant musclehead, he had to go.

In summary, women are dangerous to gangs and take them apart. Ajax doesn't know the risks, it's his own fault. He never was very smart.

If you watched the interviews on the DVD you know Walter Hill had misgivings about writing Ajax out of the script that early too. But it is what it is.

I think they portrayed Ajax as pretty dumb though. No woman sits alone in Central Park past midnite. No one but him gave her any serious attention. Was he that horney? Come on! Swan's comment was perfect though, "You never were very smart."

Yeah Walter Hill had misgivings, but he followed that part of the script. (Don't know why, ajax rocks). But i think no one realized how much punch that James Remar would bring to that character and turn the one character that everyone should have been happy to see go and turn him into one of the most popular of all the Warriors. His departure does leave a void in the rest of the film. But I credit Remar with giving Ajax that quality that everyone likes. THe man has skills.

IMO Ajax isn't my favorite character in the movie. Heck, he's not even my favorite character within the gang, or even the people that are killed off (even though he was arrested). Then again he's not my most hated/hated in general. So bleh.

It tell u that Ajax got what he got cuz it was a moral. He "had to pay" the actor was mad though. He wanted to come back but couldn't.

ajax's demise was very ironic, to be able to take down an army of gangs but be beaten by just 1 woman. how embarrassing for him huh?

oh well i never liked ajax anyway, i have always liked the background characters that arent everybodys favourite character, thats why my favourite will always be cowboy. 8)

Their mission was to get back to Coney Island, Ajax instead put Women infront of his mission to get back home with The Warriors, It was the wrong time to be thinking about Women,So that's why he got arrested.
