Being that it comes up on the original release credits, I always assumed it was the guitar riffs that play during 1 of the DJ scenes. Or did they foresee a problem with music rights (being that they couldn't get the Martha & the vandellas version)?
Your theory is sound! The song with vocals is definitely NOT Night Run. I'm gonna check the guitar riff you're referring to because I think you're spot on there!! You're quite the sleuth! ;)
I just dug-out my copy of LA-LA LAND's recent release of The Warriors soundtrack and the song referenced as Night Run on the track listing is NOT, unless by some strange coincidence there are two songs called Night Run on the soundtrack. It certainly isn't the one by Mersh Bros. It sounds much more redolent of a Barry De Vorzon composition to me. The only similarity is that both tracks are instrumental. So I would suggest that LA-LA LAND have got it wrong here. The search for the mystery artist and track that replaced Nowhere To Run on some versions of the VHS continues...

Maybe tomorrow if I have time i'll watch the copy with nowhere to run, write down all the song names as the credits roll then do the same with the other song copy.

Or has this been done already?

LaLaLand records just applied that name to some random unused music. It fooled a few people into buying the album, thinking they were getting the elusive track. I'd suggest try contacting the Marshall brothers and see if they can shed some light on the subject.

I'm chatting with Frank as we speak - that's as close as I've managed to get - let me know if you have a contact for any of his brothers...

Actually, how's this going to help? The Mersh Bros. didn't write/perform the "elusive" track, did they? However, maybe Frank will know cos he was the Executive Producer on the film, right? ;)

From what ive read in other sources, The mersh bros was/is a pseudonym for the Marshall brothers. Have a look on some other films where the mersh bros show up on the credits. Their songs are usually written by Philip marshal. It's a possibility that the guitar music during the dj scene, is one of their jamming sessions.

I think what you are referring to is almost certainly Night Run :D

Both sets of songs on the credits are the exact same just with Nowhere to run not on the one with the other song.
They didn't even re-do the creditseither they just cut a piece out where Nowhere to run was.
Night run is on both credits so i'm sure you're both right about it being the background music for the Dj.
I've wrote down a few of the lyrics to the OTHER song while it was playing, Google couldn't come up with anything to match it them.
I also tried Soundhound, shazam and imusic none of them came up with any matches at all while playing the music to them.

No problem.

Im thinking this was a piece of crap song that'd been sat about doing nothing so they just stuck it in without it ever being released

It's a good theory, sadly. I fear you may well be right.
