Was watching my mtv's this morning and saw the little MTV News snippet....
The legendary club CBGB, whihc was responsible for launching the careers of many influential rock groups such as Blondie, The Ramones, and The Talking Heads, may have to close at the end of this month , due to a rent dispute between the landlords and owner Hilly Krystal. the landlords want to raise the rent to $40,000 a month.
This makes me really mad because I've always dreamed of going there, and now it looks like I won't be able to...
The rock community will not take this lying down and will be holding a benefit concert on the 31st.
Hey PRW, don't lose hope just yet. I have been following this in the local papers for some time and the club had a small victory this week over back rent. There is hope something will be worked out;
NEW YORK (AP) -- A civil court judge ruled Wednesday that the landmark punk club CBGB's can't be evicted from its Bowery location, saying it shouldn't be punished for not noticing it owed its landlord money.
The ruling was a victory for the club where groups like the Ramones and Blondie defined the punk scene in the 1970s, but CBGB's future is still uncertain.
Its lease with the Bowery Residents' Committee expires on August 31, and a renewal remains up in the air.
I read something about this awhile back, apparently Hilly Krystal was offered an opportunity to open up CBGB in Las Vegas. Las Vegas? What the hell!? that would totaly ruin the whole idea of CBGB. I hope they can renew at the end of the month, I've always wanted to visit CBGB.
