Stooges vs. Marx Brothers

Post by emissary »

My brother in law "montro" and I are always arguing about who is better: The Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges. We've agreed to let our argument be settled here. Like the People's Court:

Gotta go with the slapstick antics of the Stooges. A nostalgic vote as I watched them a lot as a kid whereas the Marx Brothers, brilliant stuff, works more on an adult level.

I have to reply like I always do when someone asks this question. Apples and Oranges. They're both extremely good, but they're two very different comedy styles. Stooges were slapstick, where as the Marx Brothers were more of a sarcastic form of humor. A dry wit as it were. THey used some sight gags. But where very different from the Stooges. So, they both are kings in their respective fields of comedy. And, yes Political Science was a hobby. :D

3 Stooges are the best!! Grew up on em (everyday after school for years)and still watch many a rerun. Curly was so good, the best!, Shemp not bad but Joe no thanks.

The true movie about them was hard to take. Very sad seeing Curly go at such a early age and Shemp not much later, but was happy Larry and Moe hung on and did so well.

I'm gonna go against the majority here. In the Marx brothers' movies you have to watch them over and over again to catch everything that's said and done, especially with Groucho. Like GonzoNYC said, it's really more of a comedy on an adult level. I could almost bet that half the stuff Groucho said was improv... Anyways, as fun as the Three Stooges are, for me, you just can't beat the deep, sarcastic humor that the Marx brothers put out.
Oh hurt me, hurt me...

OK so who was your favorite Stooge and Marx Brother? For me Curly, of course. I liked Chico of the Marx Bros. with all the crazy Italian-English chatter and the way he messed with Harpo.

Good question. I gotta go with Moe and Chico. Chico was the only one who could get over on Groucho.
