Actually, the movie characters dont resemble the book characters at all. Maybe , you could say Hinton was very loosely based on Rembrandt , Arnold was Cleon 'cause he was leader and Lunkface was Ajax , because he was a hot head, but like the plot of the movie, the Characters were very loosely based on the book, there was no direct connection. Same with The Delnacey Thrones and The Barliquen Blazers (sp?)  being the Riffs and the Orphans, its a very loose connection.

If you read the original script of the film, the basis of the characters from the book is a lot clearer. For instance The Fox is exactly like Hinton, what with being the main character and taking charge and everything, and Rembrandt is far more like The Junior than Hinton (personally I dont see how anyone could make that connection - the only thing they have slightly in common is that theyre artists which is not their character) in his vunerability and the fact that he's afraid.
Of course, they are very loose connections, but the script was written with the book in mind and the changes they had to make were just that - changes they had to make.
Oh yes, and, in absolutley no offence to any Cowboy fans out there, it's obvious that Cowboy was not based on any character from the book because he's a novelty character with a great hat.
Okay, thats my two cents (X2) for this evening, adieu.

Good point Honey lips. I guess Walter Hill just wanted to combine both his ideas with the book.  I guess I like Walters diversity in his gang, but Sol Yurick makes the whole gang mostly the same race except Hector, which makes it more realistic about gangs.  Good observation.

This is the most accurate breakdown of the characters from the book. The Junior is more of a cross between Cowboy & Rembrandt. Bimbo is most similar to Vermin, but could just as easily be Cochise or Snow, and Dewey also seems like he could be a combination of the three. There is no character in comparison to  Fox, not blatantly.
You dropped the gun?!?! That is not gangsta, that is so not gangsta!
