I think Ajax was trying to intimidate Swan into letting him take over the gang from there at the graveyard. But, it did not work, Swan knew if he was to take over the gang, atleast for the night, because logic would say Cleon was killed by the Riffs, but the Warriors did not see or know that, then Swan had to show he was a fearless leader. As far as Cleon, to the Warriors, they could've thought he got picked up the cops or something else. Ajax tried to seize the moment, not knowing Swan would react that way and step up to him in defense. Now if these 2 did fight, as brave as Swan is, I still would have to give the slight edge to Ajax, but Ajax realized, atleast in this instance, he would not get what he wanted. After Cochise, Vermin, and Cowboy spoke up telling Ajax to chill, Ajax let it ride, they still had a long night ahead of them, and it was better to put petty differences aside, get home safe, then solve their internal issues. Throughout the film, you could still see instances of Ajax not being pleased with Swan as leader, when Swan told Ajax to leave Mercy alone, right before the confrontation with the Orphans and the molotov cocktail, Ajax was not pleased, you could see it in his face. Well, Swan did what he had to do to maintain the respect of the gang, even if he had to fight Ajax to get it, and it worked
