They are having the premier for King Kong at the Lowes E Walk in Times Square tonight. I just went by and they have both sidewalks fenced off, they have these HUGE searchlights the size of a car all over the place, there"s a big tent going from the theater all the way down the street. They even changed all the street signs to "King Kong Way".

Awesome! Mr.Rem you got to tell us how it was. I want to see it The Movie looks great.
King Kong Premier
So yeah King King was okay. Not great, but not bad.
The problem is that they spend too much time introducing characters that are either going to get killed off within the next 30 mins or are just going to be abandoned once the story shifts to Manhattan. The parts with Anne bonding with the crew were good though.
The brontosaurus sequence was just unneeded and uncalled for. I felt like half of the movie was WETA Digital just snickering to themselves.
The ending sequence on the Empire State building was not well done. it went on for far too long, the part that was actually sad was when the biplanes arrived, with Kong roaring defiantly, it being sad because you know he's going to die. The one good theme in the movie (the music sucked for the most part) plays, then switches to some action packed crap that kills the scene. Sure the composer only had two months, but really people.
They emphasized Kong's protection and love for Anne too much. I swear half the movie is Kong just staring at Anne, WE GET IT. GET ON WITH THE STORY. The beginning parts with Carl Denham were way too long. The movie is about the triangle between Kong, Anne, and Jack, and Peter Jackson is in love with every character in the film, and that is a burden on the moviegoer. He loves the stuff too much. I did like having Jack Driscoll be a screenwriter this time though.
But from the part where the ship is weaving in and out of the rocks, and when Anne gets taken into the jungle, that was all A+. it's just that many parts kept it from being truly great. I want to get a copy of it somehow, or wait for the DVD and put it on the editing software on my computer, and cut it the way I'dve liked it.
I'd give it a 75%. Very average. I'll probably see it again sometime in the next few weeks, after the big crowds go, and it will probably be better. Maybe the caffeiene, anticipation, and sheer tiredness of waiting messed up my moviegoing experience. This isn't my first midnight showing, but it is most certainly my last. No more!

Oh and they mention Hart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. We had just read the book in class, so that was fun. But then the first mate has some speech on the allegory of the novel, and Peter Jackson loves the whole Sull Island thing WAY too much and tries to make it all seem so dark and evil. It's a freaking ape! Don't take it so seriously! He throws something like that in there, then next has the most unbelievable stuff happen, i.e. Jack and Anne escape by grabbing on to a Pterodactyl-like thing's legs and simply gliding down into a river. or Jack kicking a raptor in the face.
That T-Rex (excuse me, V-Rex) fight ruled though. I just got tired of Anne screaming so much.
Tommy guns rule!

Thank You Mr. Rem.
I haven't gotten to see it yet, but the reviews I have read were sort of mixed like yours---they all liked it, but they too had some problems with it.
though Roger Ebert says it is the best movie of the year. they were expecting it to do much higher numbers at the box office than it did though, and some were wondering what happened.
the tabloids are touting it as the year's great love story---like it could be a great love story--I agree, we get it, and we got it the first 2 times too.
thank you for giving us real impressions of it, I appreciate it.

Thanks Ranchgal. Roger Ebert needs to stop snorting popcorn butter and actually watch the movie.
The only thing sadder than a person that expects a movie to be great and is dissappointed is a person who makes himself like it because he has been anticipating it so much.
Yo LIONS are the rumors true that Rocky Balboa would be fighting a robot in a partly autobiographical tale of "moving on" and aging?
That.
Sounds.
AWESOME!
ROBOT vs. ROCKY!!!!!! =P~

Well, I just saw it last night & I had promised Ranchgal I'd post a review for her, but it looks like Mr. Rem saved me the trouble.
So, Ranchgal - to Mr. Rem, you listen.
Seriously though, everything you said was pretty much spot on with the way I felt. Peter Jackson needs to learn how to edit these movies down to a manageable time frame. God knows how long the "extended edition" on dvd will be.
The whole "love triangle" that Jackson created was way to convoluted, and made less believable by Anne's seemingly being able to change her mood like the wind:
On the ship, she clearly loves Jack.
I got the distinct impression that she would have rather remained on Skull Island with Kong than be rescued.
Kong's body isn't cold yet and she's running back to Jack's arms.
Just like a woman.
There were some really cool moments that actually gave Kong personality:
I like how he was giving Anne the cold shoulder after she "spurned" him the first time.
I like when Kong escaped the theater and was running amok in Times Square, how he was picking up every blonde woman he saw in his frantic search for Anne.
I liked the Cental Park "ice skating" scene, though I think it would have been better off as a deleted scene (along with the Brontosaurus/Rapter stampede, the spider/creepy crawly scene, & most of the shenanigans on Skull Island)
Sorry, but Anne climbing to the top of the Empire State Building and waving off the Biplanes in an effort to save Kong just didn't do it for me.
I did like the parallel Jackson created with Kong & Anne sitting on the observation deck watching the sunrise to when they sat on the mountain on Skull Island watching the sunrise.
All in all, the main downpoint was it was just too freakin' long. Like other good movies that didn't know when to quit (Titanic, Gladiator), I found myself thinking "just let it end already."

On the business side it came out yesterday that the opening weekend gross was about $50 mil. They are calling it a disappointment by blockbuster standards. And based on some of the reviews here I may just wait on this one until it hits the cheaper second-run theaters around here.

Hey Gonzo, did you ever go to the 2.00 Cinema 12 in North Bergen. (33rd street & JFK bvd.)And based on some of the reviews here I may just wait on this one until it hits the cheaper second-run theaters around here.
I thought the place would be a dive for only charging 2.00 a flick, but it is new, modern & very clean

They show movies that are either just about to hit DVD (The Wedding Crashers), just were released on dvd (The 40 Year Old Virgin), or were out recently but big flops (Jarhead).
It's a great way to catch a flick you want to see again without going broke, or to see a movie you might have missed the first time around. The only thing is concession prices are the same as mainstream theaters (although they do sell 1.00 hot dogs). And they have a huge indoor parking lot & outdoor parking in the adjacent strip mall (both free).

Hey Marlboro. I've never been but have been meaning to check it out. Last time I drove to the city they advertised the cheap movies on a big banner you could see from Route 3. I sometimes go to Cine Plaza in North Bergen and they run about $4.50. They mainly show Indian "Bollywood" movies but the US releases are the cheap ones. I'll have to check Cinema 12 out.

Yeah, that's how I first found out about it, from the big banner on the side of the building. At first I avoided going there like the plague. I figured it was either a dump, or a glorified homeless shelter like some of the older theaters they closed down in the city.
But I was wrong. They even have stadium seating.
