In reference to Plato, I think that's the name for one of the key characters in the book as well.
Nope, There is no character named Plato anywhere in the book.
I just found my reference. It is actually in the original script. When the gang makes it to 96th Street, they get split in two groups: 1. Swan, Cochise, Ajax and Snowball 2. The Fox, Mercy, Cowboy, Rembrandt and Vermin.

This scene is actually part of a deleted one of countless more. Group 1 having Swan as a leader head out "safely" to the outside just to meet The Furies. Group 2 gets separated by the its leader (The) Fox who ends up with Mercy escaping a cops chase. They go down into the tracks and into that cool, hot scene which Swan took over in the movie. So we end up with Cowboy in the lead, simply because he was fast enough. Behind him come Verming and Rembrand, in that order. The description of the scene goes: ". . . He dashes down, followed by Verming and Rembrandt. At the last moment Plato suddenly throws a last look backward..." Since Rembrandt is the last in the run I am assuming he is the one looking behind.

I sort of like this scene. It is such a shame it was deleted. It is great how Hill actually captures the tension going on in a situation like that. Anyway, I guess I got carried away. I knew I had read the reference somewhere.

Next time I'll check my sources before making a naive observation like that. 8)

Cheers!

In the movie neither would I. But in the script the order goes:

Cleon
Swan
The Fox
Rembrandt

I'll bring some references from the script some other time. Gotta go spend quality time with la familia.

Later.
