I was just sitting/sleeping through my biology class, and thought this might make a good topic; do some of you older members remember what your high school was like in the 70s, 80s, and 90s? How did it differ from modern day high school like I have to sit through?

Well I haven't been on a high school campus in decades, but last time I drove by my old school they had put up a metal fence. We used to be able to leave campus for lunch, and there was no such thing as sexual harassment so alot of the immature crap i did to flirt with girls probably wouldn't fly today. As far as having boring instructors or subjects, that will never change. Try to enjoy it, at the time I thought alot of it sucked but now I look back and see how much less responsibility and freedom I had. I miss seeing friends 5 days a week and just hanging out, plus having all those females around when your young and single. Try to make or get the most out of it.

The inherent problem with this question is that the older members who remember what high school was like in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, don't know what a modern day high school is like, to compare!

4nik8 was still using chalk on black tablet when he was at school lol.
Back when I was at school, computers were nothing more than a breeze block sized calculator.
We were treated like gods if we managed to get hold of a banned video film that none of the other kids had got but desperatly wanted to see. There's no worries about having less money coming in if you decided not to show up for the day. Wish i could do the same at work.

my buddy alex would sell porn for $3 a disc out of his backpack and i'd sell pirated movies for $5 'lord of the rings' and 'spider-man' were big sellers.

We had the video nasties ban in the mid eighties, so it was illegal for video stores to rent certain horror films, ie cannabal holocaust, I spit on your grave. Between 1985 and 2000, getting hold of anything off the long list of banned movies was like gold dust.

when i was in middle school and high schoolsall that mattered was girls, gangs, drugs, guns, and money. I remeber my old gang and the fights with other gangs we had those was the best days lol. I also remember the fun time I would have with a few girls right infront of everyone lol.....well under the tables and in the bathrooms. The drugs were usually done on this bridge outside of the school where the IPS police couldnt go lol, I personaly didnt do any of them but the idiots i hung out with did. The gun problem was really bad especially when you get 7 wanna be gangsters after you and one of them pulls one out on you in front of god and everybody lol.

guns?? really? wow. thankfully we never had that problem at my school! (i suppose it's harder to get guns in the uk though?)

there was a gang (or so they thought they were), who got arrested for driving into school drunk once lol

we used to use EMA money on getting stoned/drunk in the valley instead of buying books and pencils which is what it was meant for

also, i thought i was cool because i had a 21 year old boyfriend :/

and of course skipping school to go to starbucks

the things that matter when you're a kid eh??

I remember once when I was in grade nine. I went strolling out of the school and went walking away, only to notice a big crowd suddenly converge out front when I was halfway down the street. Not wanting to get involved in any trouble, I kept walking, then asked the next day about what went down. My friend had literally been coming out the front doors as it happened, so I got a good idea of the situation.

Turns out that a couple guys in a gang from the other high school nearby came rolling up in their car. They'd been waiting out front and surrounded the guy they were after when he came out of the school. The guy, seeing he was surrounded, pulled a machete out of his pants and started swinging it around like a damn sword. The several gang members all backed off, obviously, and both they and the blade-wielding Asian dude took off. No idea what happened to the other guys, but the guy with the machete got caught and nobody ever saw him again (not that I knew who he was, he was several years older than me).

By the way, this was five years ago in semi-suburban Canada. High school rules!
