Dynamite Does Dabel Deal
Published: 12/04/2009 02:34am
Dynamite Entertainment announced that it has signed an agreement to move all Dabel Brothers titles to the Dynamite brand. Unlike previous Dabel deals, of which there are many, Dynamite will take over all aspects of producing and selling titles handled by Dabel Brothers, including creative development, production, printing, sales, and marketing.
The deal includes “books that were in the works and projects not yet announced,” according to the announcement. Some graphic novels are apparently bound by previous agreements; Dynamite will publish “all graphic novels (unless pre-existing agreements prohibit from doing so),” with distribution to be handled by Diamond Book Distributors.
Dabel Brothers has deals with many publishers and distributors. Less than two weeks ago, it announced a co-publishing deal with IDW for the next Mercy Thompson books (see “Mercy Thompson at IDW”). Other publishers with which Dabel Bros. has deals include Ace (see “Dabels Do Ace Deal for Briggs”), Tor (see “Release Plans for Wheel of Time”), Del Rey (see “Dabels Go to Del Rey”), and St. Martins (see “Dabels Do Dark Hunter Manga”). In the past, Dabel Brothers has also done deals with Marvel, Devil’s Due, and Alias, as well as selling comics under its own brand. Exactly which titles will end up being sold by Dynamite during the transition is not clear; it will undoubtedly take some time to unwind the plethora of relationships Dabel Brothers formed.
The Dynamite deal appears to be the end of Dabel Brothers as a separate brand, and of Dabel involvement in the actual production of comics and graphic novels.

From what I hear, all the O.M.A was already at a printer. Unless, DYNAMITE pays off the debt to that printer (which in articles I hear they are only doing to select ones) then we might never see the final issues. I also heard they owed the artists etc for that comic. I don't know if that was taken care of. JAILBREAK I hear the same. I know PARAMOUNT did two (2) year licenses and I think that Dabel's runs out this summer (If you think about it, the O.M.A. should have been finished by now and JAILBREAK would be finished at least by the summer). My opinion is that DYNAMITE does not finish either title and just let's the license run out. I don't think the titles sold well for them to continue it. Our little "niche" is too small for the masses. This is why the MEZCO figures (the 2nd ones) didn't lead right away to more figs and why the SIDESHOW statue is not selling. Besides us, there is no one else. I see the comic fizzling out. I don't know what comics are worth, but i don't know if there will be a profit on the comics, just us having a comic (although not finished) that we have been asking for, for a while. I do not see DYNAMITE continuing or the printing of any more issues.

Two Big Questions To Dynamite About Buying The Dabel Bros Titles
Typical. I go out to the pub with freelance-workmates and Wizard suddenly change their Chicago Comic Con dates and Dynamite Entertainment buy the Dabel Bros titles, such as Mercy Thompson, Fear Nothing and The Warriors . Heidi MacDonald told me that when she took a day off, Disney bought Marvel. Anyway.
I had two questions to put to Nick Barrucci of Dynamite. And, to his credit, he answered them.
First, I mentioned that very other publisher that has worked with the Dabels - Devil's Due, Image, Marvel, Del Rey, etc had ended up parting company with the Dabels in often sudden and contentious circumstances. So I asked why did Dynamite believe they wouldn't be one of them?
Nick told me:
We had some really long heart to hearts with them, and asked them if they would be comfortable focusing on what they do best, which is to speak with authors and acquire properties. And we would handle all of everything else!
Which presumably means managing the business, paying people in a timely and correct fashion, and cutting down on those interminable Dabel delays. I then asked if Dynamite was assuming responsibility for any and/or all debts that Dabel have to members and companies in the comics industry (such as this and this and this)- on the basis that I still hear from comic creators owed sums by the Dabels, both large and small, who are increasingly worried about getting the money owed to them.
Nick told me:
It's an asset acquisition. Having said that we are working with the Dabels to pay some creators and they will be paying other creators based on their funds as they come in starting next year. We're evaluating everything and we're rolling up our sleeves to help out as many creators as possible. It will not be easy, but it should be good to get more fans reading comics from outside the comics market

This was where I got that DYNAMITE was going to take some of the debt. Still doesn't CONFIRM they are going forward with the WARRIORS
