A completely off topic rant and request for advice

Post by KissTheRain »

So i've known my best friend Isla since we were 2 years old in the same nursery together. Gone through all of primary school and high school together and we are still as close as ever.

BUT.....

I'm am so so so sick of her moaning about Money! It's just me and my Mum together and we do just fine but Isla has come from a fairly well off family and is a total Daddy's girl. The problem is now Daddy has cut her off and shes actually realising just how expensive life really is (Running a car etc)

She only works in a small shop one day a week and gets paid a small ammount, cash in hand, once a week. She refuses to get a better job that gives her a bit of extra cash yet still Moans about being skint all the time!

Do I just sit and go to my happy place when she starts or do I try and make her see a bit of sense :?:

Believe me I have tried but she seems to think that she's going to get a really well paying job straight out of University. Now she's doing Geography so unless she plans to be a teacher, i'm not too sure what that well paying job is! She really does think she'll just wander into a £30,000 a year job!

Note that this advice is coming from a teenager with anger issues, so take it with a grain of salt.

Give up. I know this type, and there is nothing short of personal experience that will convince them that they're wrong. If she starts complaining about money, tell her in no uncertain terms that you don't want to hear it. There has got to be a reason why her dad cut her off, and whatever that is, it's probably her fault. Once she gets out of university, she will crash and burn and see the error of her ways, and then she'll be paying for all of her mistakes.

You will never convince her she's wrong, it's like trying to tell an alcoholic that they have a problem. She'll keep deceiving herself until she hits rock bottom.

Sorry if I seem cold-hearted, but there is really little to nothing you can do.

Thanks guys. I'm afraid I wasn't as tactile as I should have been about telling her to button it. I ended up shouting at her and telling her to sort her head out in a not too nice way.

She's still talking to me but apparently she "Has no idea where my outburst came from"...

Sigh. Some people.

You were probably nicer than I would have been. Good for you.

I did feel quite bad about it but since it didn't even sink in with her I'm now not too bothered.

As long as we stay away from the topic of money then we're fine but it is amazing how often the topic comes up, even if it's just when it comes to "Do you want to go get a cup of coffee?"

Spose thats the real world though...
