Why do UK People Love The Warriors So Much?

I am from Ohio in the USA. I am very curious as to why there is such a large UK following for the Warriors? It's a great movie, and I think it makes a good time-capsule of late 70's deep-urban culture. (Although like most movies, the portrayal is a bit two-dimensional, and over-stated).
But, it seems to me a purely American cultural appeal, and I am not sure why there are so many Boppers from around the world. I love it for the gang wars, the music, the culture, the subway, and the fact that I actually ran the movie at the theatre and handled the actual 35mm film.
Strangely, there are few real significant American sites devoted to the film.
So, why do you guys love it so much?

First Of All, What a Question!!! Not Too Bad, I've to say!!!
Now, I'm Italian, not from UK, from Sicily-Palermo. I mean, if you maybe (I don't think so) know Palermo... well, you can understand why I LOVE The Warriors.
But I want also to add The Warriors "Beats" all the Different Social Backgrounds... so... I mean, this is why also who's not from USA Loves It. Or should maybe I say, who's not from New York City???
But OK, the Question is for UK Members, and I don't just want to "Jump In"!!!
Instead, I want to "support" your observation about the American Sites devoted to the Film... Always Thought, Very Odd Indeed!!! 8)

Well, we don't have to confine it to UK people. I am just as interested in the worldwide following!
As to Sicily & Palermo, I am not familiar by having been there, but I have read a large amount of fiction & non-fiction about Sicily and Italy. So I can pretty well understand the whole, how shall I say... "family" atmosphere. Very similar in nature to The Warriors cultural phenomenon. I am particularly taken by the legend surrounding the actions of Don Salvatore Lucana during WWII.
Be lookin' good, Boppers!

Well, Glad you know a lot of things about... and I'd also add, about your Topic, it's not only a "Family Atmosphere Thing". There are other reasons... Anyway Yeah, that "Atmosphere" gives at least 50%.
But again, very glad you can understand somehow the "why"!!!
About Don Salvatore Lucania, or Lucky Luciano, Great Story!!! True or not!!!
Great Talk Bopper, See Ya!!! 8)

Ive never really put much thought into it, so its hard to say. New york has that unique feel to it on film that you cant capture anywhere else (see rumble in the bronx and incredible hulk and you can tell its not the same). I soaked up american import film and tv shows when I was an adolecent. Death wish, Beat street, Equilizer, Pelham 123 and french connection as well as the warriors, was part of my coming of age viewing.
Because we didn't really have a culture that was the same as what was portrayed in the Warriors, at the time, I didnt relate the film as being a gang movie. Sure, we had Mods, Rockers, skins and punks; but nothing that was the over the topness of the film gangs. Unlike later gang films such as boyz in the hood, colors or anything else by spike lee, it didnt focus on one single stereotype or focus on the false bravado and violence. Its a film where the charectors dont have to use expletives in every sentence they speak.
To me, this is a film about an adventure gone wrong and trying to get back home safe; not about selling drugs and talking about how tough you are.
Sometimes, you just want a taste of something thats different to your own culture and heritige. The place I live has had its own share of celluloid depiction. I live on the outskirts of sherwood forest and im not very far from Nottingham city. Ive seen my fair share of american tourist, so I guess its not so different to my obsession to an american film. (Kevin costner was diabolical BTW)
Hey Projectionist, Just curious: are you from Mansfield Ohio by any chance?

That was a good response. I am from Sandusky, Ohio. It is about halfway between Toledo and Cleveland, about an hour north of Mansfield. I worked in theatres in the Sandusky area for 25 years. The State Theatre, The Ohio (gone), Stearns Cinema World 1-2-3-4, (gone), The Sandusky Mall Cinema 1-2-3 (gone) and the Sandusky Drive-In (gone). Here is the URL to a video I did about the Drive-In:

In fact, if you look at the website statistics, most visitors are from the USA and then the UK so don't underestimate the American fans. As a Brit, I love The Warriors because of what has already been said before - the atmosphere. Also, I have never been to New York and whilst The Warriors felt kind of isolated and lost on their way back to Coney, I felt that with them as they made their way back through an urban landscape unfamilar to me.
