I'm from the UK, and i love the movie so much because the 'gang' (of freinds) i was hanging out with at the time went to see the movie 17 times in the 1st 3 weeks of opening. Around that time the 'gang' culture in the UK was only football hooligan type gangs. That was something we only loosley took an interest in, so the Warriors movie was something to latch onto, something to take an interest in and something to talk about.
The Movie, the style, the fights, the struggle, the soundtrack was just something that gotta hold of you and it never goes away.
By the way, my avatar is swan depicted in my local Rugby league team shirt, THE WIGAN WARRIORS, which incidently took the name warriors only about the late 90's. http://www.wiganwarriors.com/

I am from the UK and 'The Warriors' is without doubt my favourite film and has been ever since I first saw it.
I must have seen it when I was about 9 or 10, so around 1981, I remember my dad brought it home on a rented video and said to me there are some great fights in this film, just ignore the swearing!!
I was hooked the first time I saw it and for no other reason than it's just a damn good movie. The subject matter obviously helps, gangs and fights + NYC, imaginative gangs, it all added up to a great viewing experience for a young boy.
It's also a fast paced film with no real lapse in the action, so there are no boring parts, so it's easy to watch again and again.
I went on to discover Hip Hop a few years later in 84 and became fascinated with NYC from the 70s and 80s. See 'Style Wars' for a great insight into NYC in 1982, great documentary about NYC graffitti.
I used to love all those gritty street films from the 70's and 80's, 'Fort Apache - The Bronx', 'Death Wish', the start of 'Night Hawks' when they are working the streets, 'Bad Boys' (Sean Penn version), Wild Style' etc

Who are The Warriors, there must be some word...
Re: Why do UK People Love The Warriors So Much?
I would also add that in the 81-85 period we had the home video revolution in the UK, I'm sure this happened in the US and the rest of the world as well.
All of a sudden you could rent films and watch them at home when you liked, before that you had to see a film at the cinema or catch it on TV. Seems crazy when compared to today.
So most teenagers like myself just went mad for watching all these obscure movies mainly from the US, and obviously 'The Warriors' stood out from the crowd.

Yeah I'm sure 'Style Wars' is on youtube, I can't check now cos my work PC don't let me get into youtube, but i'm sure it's on there. Just try typing it in.
It's a great documentary, my favourite in fact, it really captures the magic of early 80's NYC, it was filmed in the summer of 1982. If your interested in graffitti, the subway, NYC streets, Hip Hop etc, then it's a must.
You can get a DVD of it too from the website...
