Movie reception

Post by cadet-scout »

So was The Warriors a Blockbuster or a Cult Classic?

I know what it is now, but was it well received when it first came out? and Do you think its popularity increased over time? Like its bigger now than it was then?

From what I understand The Warriors was an initial hit for a few weeks, then the gate dropped off.

I agree, because if the movie became a blockbuster, then it would simply become a classic, rather than a cult classic.  A cult classic is a film were a lot of people don't know about, but its the underground fans that keep it going, and making the essence stringer as the years go by, which is why its a cult classic.

What happened was, the movie was real popular when it was initially released.  It was number one at the the box office the opening weekend.  Then the movie got a lot of bad press because of a bunch of violent incidents in theaters around the country.  So Paramount allowed theater owners to pull the Warriors from their theaters if they wanted to, which a lot of them did.  Paramount also cut back on the marketing and advertising for the movie.  So, it made some decent money when it was released, but it could have been huge.

But, yeah, it's a lot more popular now then it ever was before.

That's really unfortunate how a few isolated incidents basically silenced a movie. A victim of its time I suppose.

I've been a Warriors fan for almost two years now. I've always known of the movie but never got around to watching it until recently. I couldn't believe the amount of absolute badassity that oozed from every frame. Such a good movie!
