Reading through the various threads in this section, you can't miss the theory that filters on the lights/cameras is responsible for the vests looking darker than they actually were.
This seemed plausible to me at first but the production stills seem to discount the theory. Sure there may have been filters used on the film cameras but they wouldn't have used filters on all the regular cameras used to capture the production photos.
The vests in the photos are all generally the same burnt sienna/maroon color as we see in the film - I'm now thinking what you see is what you get and the vests really were pretty dark.
Thoughts?

In the forum banner the vest are dark brown but in some production pics on this site they look kind of maroon. i think that burnt sienna/maroon color is a pretty accurate description of the vest color.

Not every camera may have had a filter on it, but you have to consider the effects of artificial lighting. Thats why the vests look lighter in the beach scene and darker at night. Take a look at my vest in this thread, and see the differences. All the shots were taken by the same camera with no filters, but the flash makes it look darker.

Good point 9th Delegate (and nice vest by the way) but I'm still thrown by this.
Look at the group shot used up above as a forum banner. The vests are in direct sun light on the boardwalk and still look dark. Could be no flash was used for these outdoor shots (not likely though - I work in advertising and have yet to have an outdoor shoot that didn't need a flash - even in direct sun).
Reason would dictate that if there was a flash in the above shot it would lighten the vests not darken them. But if they didn't use a flash, it would mean that the vest color we see is true to life because the lighting is natural. Either way the vests are dark.

Re: Debunked: the filter/vest color theory
I dunno about light or filters or whatever, my opinion is that the vests are dark maroon because that is what i see in the movie. I like the vests that were made by the people here, whatever color but my vote is for the darker versions.
