Could this be the makers of the original vests??
Could this be the makers of the original vests??
I searched and did not find this anywhere. Even tho the movie was made in NY, do you think the vests came from this company:
Name: East Gate Clothing Co
Street: 4751 Whittier Blvd
Los Angeles, ca 90022-3027
Phone: (323) 266-1988
Has anyone heard? You think if it was, they would do a limited run? Hmmmm. Even if it was through LOCOAPE (which I know a lot of you do not like their costumes) but it was a anctual vest made from the pattern. I can tell you being in the garment industry, if this was the company that made the vests, they still have the pattern and swatches. But is it the same?/

that would be awesome but they probably wouldnt be able to do it since the logo is not property of Paramount.

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
I tried looking for the thread, but had no success; I recall S.H.M mentioning in one of his posts that he tried looking for/contacting East Gate, back when he was getting the first vests made. Its very rare that he's on here these days, but you can try a PM and ask if that address sounds familiar.
S.H.M (soldier Heavy Muscle) was the one that did all the legwork, sending screenshots and designs to A1 to get the first retail vest made.

given the relative ease with which patches can be acquired (hell, i even had two extra sets and sold one at the conclave!), the logo is the least of the concernstriscender wrote: that would be awesome but they probably wouldnt be able to do it since the logo is not property of Paramount.
the vest, and especially the diamond cut piping, is the most important bit

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
I still say that the costume dept. took black leather (or pleather) and used one of those machines from the 70's (my sister had a toy version) that die cut patterns, cut the pattern then got another piece of leather that was slightly lighter than the vest (there are leather stores from 34th - 42nd street between 8th and 5th where you can get both the black leather piping (no pattern) and a lighter leather than the vest color) then applied it to the EAST GATE vests. The costume dept. probably vintaged the vests a little (which I do to labels and tags all the time)which gave the vests the differnt look on camerea and the underneath of the piping look lighter then it was.4nik8 wrote:given the relative ease with which patches can be acquired (hell, i even had two extra sets and sold one at the conclave!), the logo is the least of the concerns I only need a vest that is why I have been researching this.triscender wrote: that would be awesome but they probably wouldnt be able to do it since the logo is not property of Paramount.

PARAMOUNT does not own the vests that they used for the movies. EAST GATE owns the patterns and color-ways that they made the vests in. That is what the RN# on the label of the vest on goldencloset.com is. I want see if they can just mke the exact vest they used in the film. You see now that all old companies (jordache, sassoon etc) is making late 70's early 80's fashions again. If this IS the same EAST GATE, even if they run a limited quantity, they would still sell out. I am just talking about the VEST, no patches. It would be the correct pattern and color. Like I said, I searched for any posts and did not see it. SHM has not been on in a while, but it would be nice to know what he found out. There is a phone number if anyone wants call. I'm sure they might get calls all the time. I would love to know if it was them.

Knew you would try 4NIK. TOTAL SPORTSWEAR took over the place where EAST GATE was, but have since moved. I wonder if it is same company diff name? Maybe when they moved they took the patterns (this is saying that EAST GATE was the same company) Here they are:4nik8 wrote: Phone: (323) 266-1988

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
So I have been doing some more research on the original vests. It seems like the information we had before was wrong.......all wrong.
I was able to look up the RN # that was on the woven label in the vest.
The RN# is registered to:
CASUAL SPORTSWEAR CO., INC
First they were in the Empire State Building (350 5th Ave)
Then it seems they moved to:
CASUAL SPORTSWEAR CO., INC. 135 WEST 50TH ST. NEW YORK, NEW YORK, 10020
EAST GATE was probably one of the labels that they carried. There are many companies in NYC that carry many different labels. Company was formed in 1968 and looks to have closed in 1996.
That is all the info I could find. I wonder if the makers of the vest thought that people would still be talking about it all these years later, when they were first making it.
I am so surprised an EAST GATE vest hasn't shown up on eBay. I can find EVERY toy from my child hood. You know they didn't only make 18 of them.

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
The label says made in Korea, would a company based in NY have stuff made their because it's cheaper to manufacture?
Also what are the RN numbers for? I still have the East Gate jacket i bought off Ebay and it has the exact same RN number.

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
Pretty much everything (even back then) was manufactured and imported through NYC in the garment industry. Every brand I worked with had their garments made elsewhere yet the companies were based in NYC. The RN# is usually the Registered Number (thus RN#) for a specific label (or brand). It is common for two, three, four different items to have the same RN# especially if they are in the same category (this would be OUTERWEAR, the vest & your jacket).
On the note of there having to be more of these out there, I know a small order in the garment industry (and I was told things didn't change since the 60s) was 500 pcs. I'm thinking since they made a jacket with the same leather (I am assuming it is the same as the vest or you would not have bought it) they made more, probably about a 5,000pc run. That is when the it becomes more cost effective pricing. Even if production bought a high number like 50pcs, that still leaves 4,950pcs minus 10 (for showroom samples) is 4,940 for the public. Lets say 500pcs didn't sell and were destroyed, that leaves 4,440pcs somewhere out there. It's hard to imagine NONE have turned up.

Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
Yes it's the same pleather and buttons, i was hoping it had enough material to make a vest but the seams seem to be in all the wrong places, maybe someone with some skills could put something together from it, but it might be beyond my capabilities.LIER ONE wrote:I'm thinking since they made a jacket with the same leather (I am assuming it is the same as the vest or you would not have bought it)
Re: Could this be the makers of the original vests??
Try bringing it to a tailor. Have them professionally take it apart and stitch it into a vest. I don't know how would look with the stitches that are already on the leather. Have you ever posted pics of the jacket?

No i've never posted any, i'll try and get some up later, get some close ups of the buttons and pockets before the piping was applied.LIER ONE wrote:Try bringing it to a tailor.
