......But good?

Post by cowboy rules »

In the book , when the phrase 'but good' is used, what does it mean? For example , theres a line that says 'Lunkface would get what was coming to him, but good'. Theres quite a few more times its used but I cant think of any just now. It just kinda confused me.

I've heard it used in other places (like films from the 40s), I'm pretty sure it's like...
This is hard to explain..
I think it's just something that emphisises the phrase used or.. I don't know what I'm trying to say..
Okay, if I were to say "I'm going to sing tonight, but good" it would be like me saying "I'm going to sing tonight, really well."
It's stressing the point - That's what it's doing! I've never had to think so hard about the English language in my life! This post took about twenty minutes from my day, but that's what it is, it's stressing the point!
Wow! I'm so happy I figured out how to put it into words! Phew!

Isn't it used in the Warriors movie too? Right after Swan and Fox are done talking to the Orphans and they're walking towards the station, someone, i think it might be Cowboy, says "You guys really lipped them down but good".
What about me? I got the big one...

Maybe it means that you are a persistent person. You say exactly whats on your mind without contemplating on it first. You are not scared to look the dragon in the eyes, and tell it how it is.  I don't know, thats the best that I can do.

I think he just says "You guys lipped then down real good" , you could be right though. And Honey Lips, your theory makes a lot of sense , as does yours adam , but I guess theres a lot of different thoerys about so get 'em in here guys! I wanna know what it means! lol

I dont remember the exact  line from the book, and the theories already posted are great. Maybe he's saying that Lunkface would get what's coming to him, but it was good that he didnt. Like maybe he's saying at one minute, because he's mad at Lunkface, that he'll get whats comin. But then after he thinks about it, They're better off with Lunkface around. Probably not right, but a suggestion.
You dropped the gun?!?! That is not gangsta, that is so not gangsta!

It's just used to emphasize a point, is all.  Like saying "we're gonna wreck them cats, but good" means not only are we going to wreck them cats, but it's gonna be the mother of all wreckings!

That's all.

I think you're right SnowGlycerine, I was watching Sin City last night and they said it alot in that too. For example, "I was gonna get that creep, but good". And my God he really did that creep  :| That movie is brutal lol

I haven't read the book yet but I heard it was way different than the movie-obviously it would be since a lot of changes were made in the final script for various reasons.  I'm sure it's a classic book that's near impossible to put down once you get into it if you are a fan of the movie especially.
Best movie ever made-  "The Warriors"!
