But they are true juvenile delinquents, the worst kind, and this is what they do.  Of course the Warriors in the movie are more polished and more likeable as characters because it is a movie.  If the audience didn't like the gang the movie would fail, but it seems different in books because you are examining the flaws in a character and there is way more explaination for actions and thoughts, and these kinds of actions make for more interesting reading.  If the movie was made like the book it would be concidered a more serious film making harsh statements about society, more intellectual, and not as pop culture driven as the movie that was actually made.

I thought that main character in the book forgot his name the kid who was left on his own in the subway in the dark was a likeable character, he was just being more mature then the rest of the gang.

Yes the Warriors in the film are suppose to be juvenile delinquents, but if they actually murdered a guy for no reason and actually raped a woman in the film I don't think that the audience would be wanting them to make it home.  The characters are given peronality quirks that make them likeable characters; Vermin's humour, Cochise's great lines, Ajax's toughness, all those things made them great characters.  In the book the gang doesn't have any great personalities to make them likeable so you have to judge them through their actions and thoughts.  I kept wondering why they were being so cautious because no one was really chasing them and they weren't really in danger, all the trouble they thought they were in was in their minds and as a result all the trouble they got in was trough their own.  They could have just walked home with no problems if they weren't so paranoid. 

One word. Karma. That is totally true. I couldnt have put it better myself. I was wondering why they were so paranoid too. I mean no one even said they shot Ismael, and he wasnt even dead either so there wasnt THAT much reason for going after someone. And if people got away they wer just treating it like an ordinary night. Fair enough if they were deep in unknown turf, but even then they could talk there way out of it and some teams maybe even thought the truce was still on.

Actually, two bullets got Ismael and I'm pretty sure each gang had a gun.
And anyway, there was no blame for shooting Ismael because no one seemed to see his point of view or understand his vision, they were all huddled close to their own gang members (or held back) constantly conscious of the other gangs around them and Ismael's message was lost between the people relaying it like Chinese Whispers and everyone was like "o_O? wtf??"

exactly, the book version of the warriors is more realistic.  It concentrates on race issues, and explains exactly why there are gangs in the first place, because everyone has there own way of approaching the world and achieving their own goals.  Your absolutely right Honey Lips Soldier, I mean can you really imagine a skin head gang agreeing with a Muslim gang.  Everyone is just simply different.  Maybe the goal of uniting will happen in another lifetime, who knows?  But the book deals with the perfect image of the 60's.
