Its never happened to me at all.
Sometimes things like that just happen out of no where.

sometimes it could be dust on a disk or in your ps2 that makes it freeze up and crash a good clean now and then does stop that from happening.

**Thats true. Just get a clean towel and wipe the disk off. Sometimes my games get corrupted and I lose my data and have to start the darn game over again. I hate that!

All I can tell you, it's that something similar happened even to me... but it was a X-Box... and I rem the technician told me it wasn't so strange, he meant that they produce a lot (million maybe) of game stations (different brands) all perfect!!!...
...but perhaps you (like me, very lucky!!!) has bought a damaged device!!!

Well but is your PS2 warranty still valid? If yes, even if it's now working, you can always require an item change!!!
I did so, and it was the best move!!! See ya!!! 8)

Mine doesn't exactly do that, but it'll always say Corrupt File or something. Then I lose all my memory then I start all over again.

Mine crashed a couple of times, the most annoying time when I was replaying IMHO one of the longest levels - Desperate Dudes to get all the tags. I'd managed to get all the way to the gate where you meet up with the rest of The Warriors before you get chased by the Turnbulls in their bus, and it froze. I left it, came back, ejected the disc and wiped it, put it back in, prayed, all to no avail. Ended up switching it off and starting the level all over again. It also happened in Cochise's flashback mission in the club where Reggie hit's one of his girls, but other than that it's been fine.
