Me and my buddys were trying to start one up but it really never happened. I'd recomend 2 guitarists, 1 bassist, 1 vocalist and a drummer.

i would go with a rhythm guitarist/vocalist (or alternitavely (sp?) a rhythm guitarist and a Vocalist), lead guitarist, Bassist and a drummer... it really depends on what style of music you play

I think it would be 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 on the drums and someone for the vocals...to start with !
The guitar will play the rythm parts..
After a while when things go better...when the group has a few number to play...then it's time for a 2nd guitar.
The 1st or 2nd guitar can be the lead then.
That's the way I did it a few years ago.
At this moment I'm out of that band and planning to start something new...in same order

Oh...by the way...the music will be metal again.

Easy.
One dude for screaming and stuff, one lead guitarist, on rhythm guitarist who can assist in screaming or something, a good bassist who does clean vocals, and an awesome drummer.
Whatever your taste is. As lng as you are not like Creed and have a singer like Scott Stapp, no bassist and a lukewarm drummer.

It really deoends what style. For you, swan_jax, I'd say
Main guitarist
Bass player
Drummer
Vocalist/Rhythm guitars (because when you have a metal band, one guy needs to shred, and somebody needs to keep the rhythm going.)
That line-up would most likely be good if you were doing 60's rock also. And also you might need a keyboard player. For a regular classic rock group, a 4-piece would be good. Maybe with one guitar. A three piece would be okay if your bass player sung. (or guitarist or drummer) I'd want the bass player singing becasue the guitars would be too busy to sing.

Well if I started a band I would organize it like AFI!
Bass/ guy
Vocals/ me and some other guy that can scream
Drums/ guy
Guitar/outgoing guy
My fashion statement trademark for me(As leader) Would be long sleeve buttoned up shirt with a tie. Long black hair that would cover my eyes and a black derby(Hat)
Yeah that clothing thing is pretty wierd but im known to be unique at times.
My Band would be called "Butterfly eyes"
I would mix it with Punk/Rock
