martial arts

Post by Rem »

I read the book "Kung-fu high School." And man was it god-awful. Not worth the price. I want the book burned. Yeck.

but anyways I got kinda inspired to start this thread. Just want to know if there's anyone here that does martial arts.

I do Jeet Kune Do, I live in JKD central, Torrance, where both Richard Bustillo, Dan Inosanto, and I think Paul Vunak are based.

Krav Maga is Middle Eastern, right, fighting with weapons?

Doesn't Spetsnaz train in that? lol

It sounded really cool, but yeah, like a lot of the stuff Marines in the US are taught, it's meant for killing people on the battlefield. I have a friend who was in the Marines, and he was scared to get into a fight because if it happened he'd kill the other guy, like an automatic reflex. A yes...the Green Machine......churnin' 'em out.

Yep, Israeli to be exact. While Krav does teach you fighting with weapon, it focuses more on your fists, elbows, knees, legs and heads (both ways to use your head! ) Yeah I think the CIA knows it, and the FBI and a whole lotta police departments.

I use to do karate when I was 8. My dad and big brother sort of convinced me to quit because the instructor was a real prick.

I'm gonna be starting Kung-Fu classes soon.  :D  :D  :D  :D

I do Wrestling if its even considered a MA? but it is a good combat sportsthat helps in a fight! for like taking someone down or controlling them. Example: at school when someone tries to push me i duck under the push and get a double leg takedown and lift em in the air! but i never slam em just bring them down easy
I'm also considering taking BJJ for the ground game and to learn some throws!
and i would like to point out that Martial arts where it is just stand up punching and kicking is pretty much useless.(karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwan Do,  etc.) No offense to anyone but pick a grappling art if you can! (judo, wrestling, BJJ, (MMA striking is in it too).
check out Royce gracie(BJJ) vs a "kung fu" expert
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... FU&pl=true
and check out
one of royces brother vs a hapkido expert
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... do&pl=true
but hey striking arts are still good on the streets against untrained fighters.
oh yeah grappling and ground grappling is so important because almost 90% of fights end up on the ground! ;)

One time I bought this Bruce Lee book that tought you simple moves, they did work, but I eventually stop reading the book. That's about the only martial arts I ever did!

Well honestly I'd say that one can't just rely on a ground fighting style, like Jiu0Jitsu, though effective, in real life you do NOT want to be on the ground, where the guy has more chances to shiv you or shoot you.

As far as if wrestling is a martial art, I'd say that any fighting style that focuses on the sport aspect is not a martial art. It can both be used as a sport and in real life (like Muay Thai, or dare I say even boxing), so sorry in my opinion wrestling is not.

Yo LIONS, Bruce would pimp slap you for relying on that book, you should go to a seminar or two on JKD when it's in your area, they're fun.

Your probably right that you can't just rely on ground fighting by itself but it is the best martial art to rely on by itself! About 90% of street fights end up in a clinch and on the ground and that is why BJJ is great because it focus's on both of those aspects!
Although its more on the ground it won't matter much to me cause i do wrestling(which has the takedowns i need) and i'm planning on doing gi less BJJ soon! :D

We learn Jiu-jitsu in my JKD class (after all, JKD is a concept, so we learn all sorts of martial arts).

Honestly I'd say if you're happy with what you do, then do it, as long as you're comfortable with your MA of choice then it's cool.

But take Jiu-jitsu rather than Judo, Judo is nowadays meant for sport mostly, I took it for 2 years and it kinda sucked, it's not reality based fighting.

And a lot of fights end up on the ground because most people don't know how to fight, don't know how to approach a fight, and so both wind up pulling each others' shirts off on the ground. Most "school fights" which (i'm just guessing your age here) I guess you've seen a lot of based on your assumption, most school fights really suck.

Yeah JKD is pretty good. But MMA is with out a doubt the best because it is pretty much anything but biting and groin pulling !
I'm going to do gi less BJJ which is probably the same as submission wrestling. I could do mma but i don't really feel like getting my knuckles beat up or my face.
And there aren't really any school fights except ppl just pushing each other... but when someone tryies to push me i duck and shoot a double and tackle them down! :D
