The Coney Island Harlots - Part 3

Post by KissTheRain »

Vermin had been walking around Coney for about an hour and only within the past fifteen minutes had had actually calmed down. Now all he was thinking was how much of an idiot he was. All she was looking for was a little support and he gave her nothing but abuse and a complete insane rant. Now he wasn't even sure where she was. At first he wasn't sure he was ready for a kid, he could sometimes hardly look after himself. The more he thought about it the more he was starting to warm up to the idea. Ever since the Harlots had moved into Coney, the Warriors hang out had become less and less of a boys club and none of the boys complained about the feminine touch. The place smelled better, it was tider and half the boys appriciated girls who were more on their level and not just a random whore from down the block. He looked ahead of himself and saw the Warriors hang out and to the side he saw some of the Coney stores. With a small smile he headed towards the main street.

He pushed his way inside the Warriors hang out, many different sets of eyes falling on him and making him feel about 2 inches high. He walked over to the small group of Mercy, Melody, Swan and Rembrant.
"Hey guys, have any of you seen Robin?" He said quitely. Mercy stood up with a scowl and crossed her arms.
"I don't know if we should tell you" She said. Vermin rolled his eyes.
"Just...tell me, will you?" Mercy shook her head.
"You should be ashamed! I can't believe you would act that way Vermin!" She shouted. Vermin wasn't sure how much more of the talking to he could take. It was bad enough he had his own guilt to deal with without Mercy adding to it.
"I mean come on, she's scared! She just wants your support and you go totally insane!"
"LOOK! I KNOW I was wrong and it was really stupid of me to totally lose my mind but I'm looking for my girlfriend so I can put things right and to be honest Mercy, friend or not, it has nothing to do with you! So BACK OFF!" He shouted, his temper finally getting the better of him. Swan would have told him to calm down but it was the first time he'd ever seen Mercy lost for words. The dark haired girl just slowly sank into her seat and didn't say anything. After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence Melody let go of Rembrant's hand and stood up.
"She's sitting at your usual bench" she said quietly. Vermin nodded and took in a few deep breaths before turning around on his heel. "What's in the bag Vermin?" Melody shouted after him. He turned around and smiled.
"If it works, Robin'll tell you later"

She was exactly where Melody had said she would be, sitting cross legged on the bench and wearing one of his hodded tops and looking out at the sea. He slowly began to walk towards the bench, tryin to make sure that he didn't frighten her.
"Hey" She said, her voice taking him off gaurd. He didn't realise she knew he was there. She didn't turn around to talk to him though, her face still looked out to the beach.
"Hey" He said quietly, making his way around and sitting next to her. He had to admit he was a little hurt when she didn't instantly move closer to him but then again he supposed he deserved it.
"So have you calmed down?" She asked. He nodded and crumpled the bag in his hand out of nervousness.
"Yeah I have. Robin i'm so sorry, I was a totally idiot!" He started, but she rasied her hand as a signal for him to stop.
"Vermin, I knew you weren't going to take it well but you scared the hell outta me" She said. He sighed.
"I know and I want to make it up to you" He said. Robin sighed and moved some hair from her face.
"Vermin...I'm going to be honest with you" She started, her voice was shaky, "If you don't want me to keep this baby...then I'll get rid of it. Mercy knows this place that I can go to..." Vermin turned to her, shaking his head strongly.
"Hey hey, Wait, I didn't say anything like that!" He said, grabbing her hands "I've had time to think about things and...I think that we'll be okay" He said quietly. Robin smiled, trying to not cry.
"Really?" He nodded.
"Well yeah, come on! We're good! We're really really good and...who wouldn't want a smaller version of the two of us mixed together!" He said with a  cheeky grin making Robin laugh for the first time in a few days. She had almost forgotten how much he could make her laugh with his silly little comments. "You know, we have pleanty of money and there isn't gonna be a kid in New York who'll be better protected!" He turned to the paper bag in his hands "And if you don't believe me, I got something"
She reached inside the bag, unsure what she was feeling at first. It felt like leather but it was really soft. She could have cried when she pulled the tiny garment out. Inside was a miniture version of a Warriors vest, the exact same as Vermins.
"Oh my God, Vermin that is adorable!" Robin said, her eyes starting to fill with tears. Vermin smiled as she finally moved closer to him so he could put his arm around her.
"And hey, if it's a girl, I'll get a Harlot's vest made" He said, "I would have done that too but...I don't know where you guys get your vests from..." He trailed off looking a little lost. Robin smiled and kissed him.
"You are so sweet...and you're sure your not going to freak out in 4 months time?" He nodded.
"Yeah I'm sure..." Robin raised an eyebrow.
"Very sure?" He kissed her on the cheek and squeezed her closer to him.
"Very sure" She grinned at him and pushed herself up from her sitting position.
"Come on, We better go show face...just in case Mercy still wants to beat your head in with a big stick"

---------------------

The happy couple had walked back to the hang out, Vermins arm around around Robins shoulders. They didn't say much on their way back but then neither of them felt like they really had to, everything they wanted to say was out in the open. Robin couldn't believe how thoughtful he'd been in getting the mini Warriors vest, she'd have loved to have seen the look on the guy in the stores face when Vermin asked for it. Maybe if they had a girl she'd get another chance.
As they walked in they were greeted with a number of grinning faces, all of them waiting for one of the two people to speak. Robin looked up to Vermin before looking towards the crowd of Warriors and Harlots.
"We're fine and Yes, I'm having a baby" She said with a shy smile. Even as a leader she sometimes wasn't used to having so many people hang on her every word. The group infront of them suddenly broke into a happy applause, some of them running towards the couple as they walked further in, hugs and congratulations being spread around. Swan smiled to himself. It had been a while since something this monumental had happened in Coney Island for them. Not since they had wiped out the Destroyers and that was a while ago. At the same time it concerned him. Sure it could be done and it wasn't like Robin was short of Money. The racket she was running brought in more than enough and though not morally right, Robin wasn't stupid. She wasn't going to let her kid in on what was going on. He was snapped from his thoughts as he felt Mercy's arms wrap around his waist. She had a beeming smile over her face as she looked from him to Robin and Vermin, who were still in the middle of a huddle of people.
"Isn't this great? I'm so happy for them" Mercy said, her smile still across her face. Swan nodded.
"Its a bit unexpected but...It's nice. My boys are growing up" He said, "Vermin is all moved in and having a kid, Even Rembrant is getting pretty serious with Melody"
"And at the same time, we're still all managing to stay a street family. Thats something you should be really proud of" He said, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Once the flood of congratulations had died down, a small party had started. Music was playing, cards were being delt and soon there were kegs of beer being carried in. Robin sighed, she figured she wouldn't be having beer for a while but given the circumstances she felt fine about it. She settled for Coke instead, Mercy, Melody and another couple of her girls joining her to make sure she didn't feel left out.
Suddenly the door to the hangout swung open and cracked against the old brick walls causing bits to crumble off. There was a silouette of a small but well toned man in the door way, his floppy hair slightly messy.
"What the fuck is going on in here!" A familiar voice shouted. A very familiar voice. Swan stood up and walked forward towards the man.
"AJAX??" He exclaimed. Ajax stepped forward. He looked the exact same as he had the night he got arrested accept he wasn't wearing his vest.
"Thats my name. Now come on, tell me what the fuck is going on in this place! Who are all these broads?" He asked looking around at some of the Harlots. Some of the girls didn't know if they should be offended or turned on by the loud mouthed stranger. He then looked Mercy up and down before looking over at Robin who was nestled under Vermins arm.
"Since when did we have girls hanging in here?" He asked. Swan shrugged.
"It's a long story and you've been gone a long time. Come on, sit down and tell us how the hell you got out in the first place" He said, putting his arm around Ajax's shoulder and guiding him over to the sofas where they all sat down, all of the Warriors crowded round to listen in.
"I got off on the sexual assault. Bitch had no proof but they put me down for assaulting a cop. I got 3 years but they let me out for 'good behaviour'" He said, using air quotes. Most of the boys sniggered and some laughed out loud. Ajax sneered. "Hey, Fuck you guys! It was the only way I was getting out anytime soon!" He said. Swan suddenly noticed that he wasn't wearing his vest.
"Where's your colours?" he asked. Ajax shrugged.
"The pigs took them off me. They don't give gang colours back...personal property or not. Fuck it, i'll get another one tomorrow" he said, nodding to Snow who handed him a beer. "Now you answer my questions. Whats going on with all these girls?" He said, scanning the crowd and winking at one of them, making her blush. Swan sighed.
"These girls are a gang called the Harlots..." Swan began but Ajax quickly cut him off.
"I heard about these broads. Damn Dj wouldn't shut up about them. Don't they belong in Gramercy?" Swan shook his head.
"It got a bit complicated. Long story short, we're doing a turf share with them" Ajax screwed his face up in disgust.
"Thats bullshit! Since when do the Warriors share turf!?" He shouted standing up. Some of the Harlots and Warriors had decided to walk away and leave the main players in the conversation to it. They figured they'd hear the shouting from far away anyway. Swan stood up to match Ajax.
"Since almost 8 months ago now. You've been gone a long time, Ajax, things have changed" Swan said through slightly gritted teeth.
Robin had never felt more uncomfortable in her life. It was the first time a Warrior had been upset about the turf share. Some of them originally weren't sure but after a few weeks everything was working out great and the subject was never brought up again. Now there was a small angry man shouting at Swan about something that was put to bed a long time ago.
"And why the fuck is she here? I figured we ditched her back with those Orphan faggots!?" Ajax spat nodding towards Mercy who frowned back at him but moved slightly behind Swan.
"Hey! You leave Mercy out of this! She's my girlfriend and has been since you got put away!" He shouted. Ajax sniggered.
"Yeah right, next thing you're going to tell me that Vermin's settled down!" He quipped still sniggering at his own joke. The smile soon faded from his face when he noticed that no-one was laughing and a few people had their eyes cast to the ground.
"Aww you gotta be kidding me!? Vermin man seriously?" He said looking to his friend, almost pleading with his eyes for it to not be true. Vemin nodded and shrugged.
"Sorry man, going on 8 months now" he said, his arm around Robin who just stood there with an awkward smile on her face. Ajax nodded towards her.
"and I suppose you're his girlfriend?" Robin nodded.
"Yeah...Hi.." She said quietly, her voice shaking. Ajax shook his head.
This really wasn't what he was expecting. He thought things would be different sure, since Swan was now Warlord, but this was totally going over his head. There were girls all wearing black vests everywhere all staring at him like he was mad. Who the fuck were they to question him? This was HIS hangout long before they were on the scene. Swan was settled down with that girl from the night of the conclave and she was in a uniform too. Harlots was it? Vermin was settled with a girlfriend too. He could remember (And not remember) many nights when he and Vermin headed up to the Black Cat stripclub for a little easy action. Most times they ended up with one of the strippers and they had to sneek out in the morning. Now the place looked almost domestic. Christ, even Rembrant had a girlfriend!
"Jesus. Well if thats the way it is..." He said, slightly defeated, "I'm going to go take a walk around the neighbourhood. Get my grounds again" he said. Vermin turned to Robin.
"I'm gonna go with him, we need to catch up" He said before kissing her on the cheek. Robin smiled and nodded at him, letting Vermin follow his friend outside to the board walk.

Ajax is back! :D

This is a great story. In particular, I find that you are an extremely good writer of dialogue. Your conversations read very realistically, the way people actually talk. I've found that to be a pretty difficult thing to do, so good job. :)

Can't wait for the next chapter.
