In my opinion I always admired the 1970's culture, and the things it faced.  Wheather it was fahion, cinema, politics, or creative expression, I respect what it has gone through.  I think this is why we like the fact that the warriors is taken place in 1979, because of the pop culture of its time.  Now I got totally barthered that Walter Hill made the directors cut DVD, say "sometime in the future".  I mean I can see why he would do that, beacuse even gangs at the time were not like that.  But regardless, the feeling, and essence of the movie, belongs to the 70's.  I strongly believe that the warriors universe, is meant to stay in 1979, and the ehole future thing distorts its meaning.  Does anyone else feel this way.  I mean, is up to us to decide which era it belongs in, or is there a rightful one?  I for one believe the warriors existence belongs in 1979, and not the future.

Exactly, thats my point.  Being that the era only refelcts 70's culture, it would be hard to predict the issues of the future, making the movie exist in 1979.  Who knows, maybe when hsaid near future, he just meant one year ahead, movies do that for some reason.  the fact that it is 1979, makes this movie a classic.

Good point. I think he tried to do the same thing with 'Streets of Fire', but everyone could tell the movie took place in the doo wop 50's. This might be cause Walter simply did not want to offend the City the movie was taking place in, or he was just doing what he did best-offer a great story and film, with a fantasy and somewhat futuristic feel to it.

Like many people, I prefer the idea of the Warriors taking place firmly in 1970 than the future. Hill did that originally in order to give it a more comic book fantasy feel. When he said future, I doubt he meant spaceships and lightsabers, but more of a grittier Mad Max feel. I think it works best as a fantasy 1979.

AHHH - Escape from NY.  Another film I try to make a point to watch at least once or twice a year.  For some reason the depiction of the future in this movie still holds up, even though the SFX are dated now.  Probably because the film is mostly confined to the prison Island of Manhattan and the makers never had to deal with depicting a futuristic society on the whole.

You could make a case that the Warriors is pretty confined too.  Only covers one day, takes place almost entirely at night or early morning when most folks are tucked in their beds, characters are limited to night lifers and cops... 

To me the thing that keeps Warriors firmly planted in the 70s/80s, despite Hill's attempt to make the setting ambiguous, is the music (the pop songs they used), wardrobe and hairstyles.  They are unmistakingly 70s/80s.  Escape from NY had a synthesized, John Carpenter soundtrack that was pretty timeless and didn't mix in any popular tunes.  Also the inmates had dated outfits but this made sense because they were cut off from the rest of world and "fashion" consisted of whatever scrapts they could find in Manhattan after it was evacuated and turned into a prison - kinda like a time capsul.

Another good point Uriah, its the fact that he put 70's pop culture inro the movie, such as the cloths, hairstyle, music, and slang. as apposed to Escape from New York, that made us wonder about our future, and where it leads us.

I personally think that the warriors should not stay in 1979 the warriors is such a good movie and even these days people are still obessed with the movie and the warriors has been around for 28 years.

I think that the Warriors in 1979 really suits it because back in 1979 a movie like The Warriors was pretty damn taboo and was another reason why it was such a success and why its still popular now and if the Warriors was from a different era I don't think it would of been a success because by then it probably would of been done and the 70s music playing during the movie all suited every scene of The Warriors and Walter Hill created something original something that had never been done before something that no one else had ever dared to do and The Warriors was the first of its kind many movies have tried to find the success that The Warriors had but none have come close the only one that even came near was The Wanderers so if The Warriors was in a different time era I don't think it would of been a success and it wouldn't of been original.

Well "The Warriors" were in the right place at "THE RIGHT TIME". I mean everybody knows NewYork was gangs turf in that period, and they were the mirror of that way to live the City. People was different in 1979, someone had more fears, while today people seachs for experiences like those by the movie .

LOL hahahaha, oh dear i didnt think of that silly me, well i guess it was based on the same time as the movie was madewhen it says future it may mean after 2000bc or what ever it is after the greeks

70's have a special magnetism...... I can't exprime my feeling but this movie can exist only in that period.

Good point guys.  You see this is what I mean.  I can understand Walter Hill wanted a comic book feel to it so he made the Director Cut look like that, but I believe he distorted the essence and feeling of the 70's by writting "Sometime in the Future"... the aura of that decade is lost if you do that.
