Contemplative Tunnel
Contemplative Tunnel
Do some of wonder, when Swan is walking through the Tunnel off screen by himself, like Hinton did in the book, he contemplated on his life? Sometimes I believe, that if he did spend a large amount of time in there, he came face to face with his demons, and really got in touch with himself. He realized his path in life, and who and where he is going as an individual person. Does anyone have any view on this? I for one think, Swan really opened his mind and saw the truth of his persona.
Re: Contemplative Tunnel

Re: Contemplative Tunnel
I agree with you... Hinton wants to beat his fears up to be a better person in that dark tunnel, the same is for Swan, at the end of the movie, when he realizes what a crappy life he is living, without a target.adam88 wrote: Do some of wonder, when Swan is walking through the Tunnel off screen by himself, like Hinton did in the book, he contemplated on his life? Exactly, the ending alone, seems as if he was reborn into the person he was truly meant to be. I guess you can say, that the rest goes for them as well. Maybr they all went through their own personal tunnels, that night.

Re: Contemplative Tunnel
Now that you mention it, maybe Swan did take time to think to himself in that tunnel , leading to his decision to 'Take off'. He still seems unsure though, his expression and the way he uses 'maybe' makes it look like hes still unsure about it. It could have been a big factor in it though. Good topic

Good point Scurvy Dog, Its as if life is one depressing obstacle, after another. I suppose, life is whatever you make of those obstacles, and what you can learn from these expierences.
Re: Contemplative Tunnel
I agree with doyle Swan realized that his life was pathetic as a gangster almost getting killed looked at as a scum and also always on the run from the police.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

dude.....
would you go write a damn book, already??
or write a social, and society, satire column!!
its a movie, for crist-sake!!! ::)
man, whered you grow up?
youve got this fasination, with the hoodlum, mind!!
man, trust me..
it aint half as deep, as you try and make it out to be!
survival, aint all that complcated to understand.
every one in that position, re-examines theyre life.
as do most people, in life.
theres no big mystery, to the tunnel.
or the movie, or society.
dude just had enough, period!!
now let me ask you this, since were analyzing, here.
do ya think he really left, after that?
ya know, "just take off"
my mom threw me out, when i was 17.
5 days, after being shot, twice.
wasnt even healed yet.
and she literally woke me up, by beating me, with one of my shoes!!
(and i got big feet!) LOL
telling me, she didnt want "this" anymore!
and couldnt deal with me coming home in the middle of the night, half-dead, anymore.
"theyre gonna kill you, Michael"
"when are you gonna stop this sh*t??"
"i cant watch this, anymore!"
"im not gonna be here, for the phone call!"
she was right, btw!

and probably saved my life, by making me leave.
but, thats not the point!! LOLOL
anyway..
but guess what?
i didnt leave.
after being homless, for a few months.
and ending up in cook county jail, for about 4 months..
my sister finally let me move in with her, in the suburbs.
and guess where i was, every weekend, and free second, i had?
yeah, right back to my old neighborhood!
i kept goin back.
i hated the suburbs!!
i still do!

everybody always says.."just leave, get out of it!"
"just stop!"
its not always easy, to just "leave"!
and sometimes, "change" is scarier, and more frightening..
then where your already at, and what your already doing.
Tried to give the devil my soul...
She said i had nothing to bargain with...

Re: Contemplative Tunnel
I did think the same that the walk in the tunnel from one side to the other made Swan think long and hard about what he was doing bashing heads - no future, no goal.
I also think that there must be footage of Swan interacting with that Sheriff game when he's just about to encouter the punks. In the book, Hinton duels with the Sheriff - it's an enlightening moment for him - you see the Sheriff in the moviie, and have to wonder if Walter Hill did film some scenes which were than cut out during the editing process.
I still am baffled that the Director's cut featured no extras - and the version he put out just included those comic segues.

Well, you should really know me by now SHM. You see, I am like a Bohemian. I like to express myself, on anything my mind comes across. Its funny, how Ironic your statements are, because when ever you talk to me, your topics discuss complex situations. If I am not correct, I believe it was you who ounce replied to a topic, about the Joe Walsh song, and described the dirty park witch was bum infested, and how you used to sit there and look at the sunset. It was sad, but yet peaceful. Its not gang affiliation I contemplate on, but life in general. Thats the person I am, and I can't change that.

Re: Contemplative Tunnel
I'm still a book virgin which may surprise you - I will have to get around to reading it!! I never thought that Swan thought of anything, but I'd say Cowboy Rules probably has the right idea. Then again, I think the sweeping shot of Coney when he arrives says it all - I wouldn't have been surprised if he saw it and decided then and there that he would take off.cowboy rules wrote: Now that you mention it, maybe Swan did take time to think to himself in that tunnel , leading to his decision to 'Take off'. Well SHM(Mike), at my university, I take a whole bunch of coarses to expand my writing. I never written a book, but I take several different topics, like Philosophy, or sociology(you know, all that fancy stuff with the "Y's" at the end), and whenever I am assigned to write my thoughts on the topic, I just pour everything into it. Things from the existence of life, all the way to why Kane on Kung Fu keeps walking the Earth forever. Yu know all that complex stuff, which I think anyone can express if they set their minds to it. I am just like anyone else. There are times, where I am in the mood to write about the mysteries of the universe, and think of myself as a traveler like Bill Bixby on Incredible Hulk. Than there are times where I am completley lazy, and just want to watch an action movie, with something blowing. Like all Bohemians, we only live ounce, and merely observe any form of life.
