When Rembrandt steps down from the bathroom stall, it looks like he's wearing Converse...and then sometime I thought I saw Snow wearing Chucks....did they all have to wear them? Because that would have been quite cool, although it would have made it diffcult to run, seeing as Chucks have very little arch support...
Just another theory on gang uniforms:
When we see the Boppers at the beginning of the movie, some of them are wearing different hats or shirts underneath their vests...could this have shown the rank of the members?

I doubt it, it was more personal choice in my opinion---The colors (vests/hats badges whatever symbolized the gang group) themselves were what was important---what was underneath was just what ever you put on that day--depending on the weather---that is why I would say personal choice---IT can get COLD in NYC sometimes!!!!

i agree with ranchgal, the shoes would be a personal choice (ajax was wearing hiking boots and it looked like swan had on wrestling shoes) :)

This was before the Chuck Taylors were "hip". I'm pretty sure it was due to low cost that most kids in gang neighborhoods back then wore them.

Converse are the shoe of choice for you everyday rebel, and so comfy! I own three pair myself, and they are admired by those who aren't hip like myself.

:x :x i hate that they're considered "kool" now and all the kidd's call em "chuck's" i yell at my neice all the time!! lol "stop callin em that!! lol they're all-star's!! the original!! that's all we wore when we were kidds!! they were cheap, and nothin, i repeat nothin, grabs hot pavement in the summertime better than all-stars!!! we used to call em "bubble-gum-jumper's! because, when it was hot they grabbed cement like gum!! and when you're runnin home, with 5 guy's chasing you because school is across the dividing line, of your neighborhood, and theirs! you want a good old pair of all-star's!! believe me, i know!! lol plus, it was a way of identifying each other. by the color of the shoes, and the color of the string's. you could tell who was in what gang. does anybody remember the shoe string braid's, in the 70's? they were pretty much a ghetto, or hood thing. we would get 2, or 3 pair's of string's or our colors and weave em, and interlace em. my best friend was a black kid named rob, (he was shot, and killed when we were 16.) and his sister used to do all the lacing for all of us! she could make diamond shapes, heart's, anything!! i still got 2 pair's, and my boy wear's em now too!!

Well, It'n not like Air Jordans were available in '79 anyway + the fact that probably no one in the gang could afford them even if they were! :x

The shoes like Cochise is headress and bling he wears would be personal choice. But when you look at it Chuck Taylors were in style then too just like bell bottoms
