We are 100,000 Strong

I'm reading the taglines and trying to remember the movie but I can't seem to make heads or tails of the math here.

If I'm not mistaken they were actually about 900 strong that night yet the taglines say, "They are 100,000 strong. They could rule New York. Tonight they're all out for the Warriors.". The Warriors only ran into at the most, what, 75 gang members on their way home? Where's the other supposed 99,925?

And when Cyrus does his math at the podium - "9 deligates from 100 gangs here tonight and 100 more just like em out there ready to fight" I believe was the line Cyrus used, he somehow magically gets to 60,000 potential members. Still shy of 100,000 mind you like the tag line says but even if you give each gang 100 guys, which is extremely generous, you still only end up with 20,000 (200 gangs x 100 members each = 20,000).

Would someone like to try and figure this one out?

i agree with you cyrus plan did seem a bit off. also there was 900 delagtes plus 20 000 cops for the whole city so why are the warriors against 100 000 now

Perhaps some of the gang members that weren't at the meeting heard the announcement on the radio.

Well both the Riffs and the Warriors had more than 100 members and I am sure many of the other gangs not named may have had too.

There are also the un-named affiliates that wouldn't have been mentioned in his figures accurately.

AND all the lesser gangs---like the Orphans-who were not ever even invited to the meeting---there must be LOTS of them too--

While I am not saying that Cyrus's figures would ever actually add up to
100,000----there is a definately possiblity that the figure may come fairly close to all the kids running on the streets at that time.

Yeah I kind of look at it as just a marketing number to sound impressive kind of a large rounded number !

It's only after watching movies over and over that we start to over analyse that is the fate of the Star Wars movies. I only started nitpicking after things were pointed out to me rather than just enjoying the film as I remember it.

Now not to step on your keen eye for detail at all as I would never have been able to do the math. Just throwing my own opinion on I'd rather try and not over analyse for my own benefit.

I am of the opinion that Cyrus only invited delegates from gangs with large numbers-like more than 100. ANd if the Warriors had around 120 and the Riffs were the largest gang in the city-that leaves some room for some mid sized gangs too cause: In the original script Cyrus says:

9 delegates x 100 gangs and there are 100 more(not invited) equals: 20,000 (meaning each gang had to number 100 at least for that to be right.)
40,000 counts the gangs and includes their affiliates.
and 20,000 more not organized but ready to fight.

So that is 60,000 soldiers, and then when you count the women
it comes in to close to 100,000."

That is how he came to that number. He was counting the DEBS as well as the DUDES.
