I always heard that line and just let it go by.  But now I wonder.  What would it be like to be a Riff prisoner?  I guess my mind is unable to prevent images of Americans being held hostage and the kind of pain they're in.  Would the Riffs torture prisoners for information or just kill them?  I know it was scripted that Swan got captured but it was thrown out.  Was rival gang kidnapping ever a real issue?  It seems tedious.

I think they would beat the crap out of the victim and nothing more!

I agree. The Riffs probably only wanted the remaining Warriors alive so they could finish them personally. It is possible though that they wanted to question the Warriors as well, becuase anyone who would waste the leader of the city's biggest gang had to either be insane (which Luther apparently was) or could of had some pretty big plans cooking that the Riffs were standing in the way of and tried to weaken them by putting Cyrus in the ground.

I think kidnapping amongst gangs was propably pretty common. Kidnapping a rival Lt. or leader or maybe even a prominent associate of a rival gang could score a nice ransom, not to mention valuable information on anything the other gang could have going on.

The Riffs most likely wanted the Warriors brought in alive so they could have the satisfaction of avenging the death of Cyrus.

Incidentally, if you haven't checked it out already, read the original script to the movie. There should be a link to it on this site. It's somewhat different from what actually was filmed. The Riffs don't take anyone prisoner, but...

I know the Riffs aren't scripted to take Swan.  I mentioned it because it was relavant to my question.  But thanks for the opinion. 

You could easily image captive Warriors each being forced to run a gauntlet of Riffs each kicking, punching stabbing etc., as they went by.  Revengeful leisure time activity!

its obvious y the riffs wanted them alive! 1stly 2 ask them y they killd cyrus and then 2 torture them and give evry warrior a painful death

i used to know some "shady" caracters, so to speak! LOL 
but, anyway, (LOL) if you owed em 2 much money, for 2 long, there was a good chance, you'd be getting a phone call saying, your mother, or sister, or somebody, close to you, was missing.............

I always believed to be a Riff's prisoner, you would first go through a mental state of torture before a physical stae of torture.  The Riffs have some sort of aura that makes them look more smart than we think they are.  Before killing you, they make you feel like the lowest form of scum and lowlife not known to humanity.  That you are not even worth going to hell over, and reach down into your soul revealing the most intimate secrets and personal demons you hace.  They would sya some cold blooded smack before killing you that would make your blood run cold.  Stuff so evil and terrifing that you would beg to be killed.  Than they wouldn't give you the pleasure of diying easy.  The torture they would put apon you would be so sadistic, that the hell you will be sen't to will be nothing compared to the physical and mental tortue they put you through.  Its not a matter of just killing, but how I can make you suffer, and put you through my own personal hell, the riffs way.

or maybe they would of killed their warlord and beat up the soilders but let them go...

The other side of this is "...if not, wasted..."  think about that for a second.  would they really bother transporting a corpse around the city?  To what end? 

I think that the riffs would torture any of their prisoners and get anwsers off them for something they needed to know and then kill them after that is what i think the riffs would do.

This invites the question: Did these armies of the night want to kill one another?  Or did they just want to beat one another, aware of and accepting, death as a potential byproduct? 

Ye "Alive is possible...if not WASTED"!!! After Cyrus shot, Masai and The Riffs don't want anyone alive...that's only a way to say! Maybe Cyrus wanted to kill by his hands who shooted his bro. I don't think they want to find any main mind behind this murder!
I've only a doubt, I already wrote about that: who is calling Luther on the phone...maybe it's only an idea,
or some main mind was really behind the murder?!! 8)
