I got some Explainations to some of the warriors names.

Swan: Swan of course is a white guy but the thing about him is what girl didn't see him as hot. Hes like a Swan He's white and beautiful and is tough.

Vermin: Verimn is fidgety and frisky, he has a little tooth sticking out of his mouth *Which is really a small detail* and he always complains and hangs around his buds like a Vermin inside someones house.

Rembrandt: Famous artist, This pretty much explains the kids art skill (Other art besides the Giant W)

Cleon: His name was probably Leon but because he lives on Coney he put the C in his name Leon. Cleon

Cowboy: This should be a easy one.

Snow: Still unknown.

Fox: He probably is the watcher of the group he sneaks around alot.

The others like cochise and Ajax Im still loookin to find out what inspired their names.

Maybe Snow is some anti-racist name? I don't know but maybe because he is black somehoe the name snow was. given. I remember seing Full Metal Jacket and the drill serseant saying to a black soldier that his nickname should be snowball. However, I'm not sure. With Cochise, well his name is the name of an Indian Chief and by the way he dresses I think there would be some connection.

The name that always intrigued me the most was Ajax. I don't know excatly what it implies, but my idea is that since Ajax is a detergent for rough dirt it may suit the Warrior toughness in fighting.

Marcelino Sanchez was an artist in real life which is why his character was called Rembrandt, and he went on to be the graffitti artist in the movie. Interesting fact I got from the press pack. More to come soon!

The plot of the film (which was adapted from the novel by Sol Yurick, and loosely based on Xenophon's Anabasis)

So maybe Ajax is named after this 'Ajax' mentioned below.... :?:

In Greek mythology, Ajax was son of
Telamon, king of Salamis, he was
second only to Achilles among the
Greek heroes in the Trojan War.
According to subsequent Greek
legends, Ajax went mad with jealousy
when Agamemnon awarded the armor of
the dead Achilles to Odysseus. He
later committed suicide in shame.

Also check out this link it has a table comparing the "The Warriors" to Xenophon's Anabasis.

Snowball is named that because of racists old comments. Back in the 50's black people were called snowballs because the white people said they were moving in like a pile of snow. so each black person was referred to as a snowball. At least that's what my dad says.

Interesting parallels there - but some are stretched and at least a few are erroneous. The name of Cleon, for instance, was simply directly taken from the name of Cleanetus's son. (Unless, of course, the author of the comparison intends to draw parallels between the respective characters rather than their names - in that case, s/he is obviously correct).

Ultimately, Walter Hill would be the person to ask about the names, as without sufficient information, many of them can be interpreted in various ways... "swan", to take the first one in the row, could for instance be tied to the Indian symbol depicting the firmamental journey from dusk to dawn - which, essentially, is what the film's Swan does.

ajax definitely took his name from the cleanser: removes tough dirt. it fit his personality. i also agree with snow's name being a product of racism but i believe he took it to reverse whatever negative power it might have had.
