It's not really the character I have a problem with, it's the actor. And it's not even that I think he's a bad actor, I just think he's miscast. I guess my problem is all about his look: The white guy 'fro, and the fact that he looks nervous all the time. Funny, I can suspend my disbelief enough to believe there's a street gang made up of killer mimes, but I have trouble believing that this guy is out on the streets busting heads and not, say, in accounting school.
I can see why Walter Hill decided that he wasn't the best love interest for Mercy. (you can see him try to get the two together...the 'we're not gonna hide who we are just cuz some whore shakes her ass' comment, and also him sitting on the subway train with Mercy and fleeing with her right before he eats a train. You can see that the chemistry just isn't working. I also don't know what problems Thomas Waite was causing on set to make Walter Hill decide to kill off the Fox, but I'd be interested to hear about em.
I don't mean to pick on the guy. His intelligence is clearly valuable to the gang. But...he looks like belongs in accounting school.

No but he certainly made a better love interest for Mercy.

I can't see someone bulky and too tough looking playing the character Fox, simply because those are not the characteristics of a scout. A scout has to be small and fast and not attract too much attention. The fact that he doesn't look tough makes him not stand out too much, perfect for infiltrating an enemy's turf.

Yes! The actor not the character!

I agree with Harley about Fox. Fox is more diplomatic, that's his strength.
Also from watching the movies, it's always assumed that Swan and Mercy have a romantic relationship. But, what evidence is there to prove that Swan and Mercy are an item? There is no kissing, no hugging, no words exchanged. Sure, he gives her a flower and he 'accepts' her, but just because he is a man and she is a woman doesn't mean they're an item. Can't the guy just do something nice?
To me, it isn't obvious that they have a relationship. Swan never acted romanticly towards her. What is more important about these two is that they want better lives, and they help each other to see that......and get away from their current lives.
Swan never seemed like he fit with Mercy, romantically wise. Mercy just doesn't seem like the kind of girl Swan would want to have as a girlfriend. I think it's one of the many issues left up for the viewer to decide.

Well, they do suck face in the subway tunnel. I think that by the end of the movie they have as much of a relationship as you could expect two strangers to develop in one night spent running for their lives.
Also, it's clear that Swan is a pretty guarded fellow who doesn't let himself get too close to people. The fact that he makes a gesture to Mercy at the end with the gift of the corsage speaks volumes.

There's alot of evidence to suggest that Swan and Mercy were a couple. How could you miss the kissing? They share a passionate kiss in the subway tunnel, which clearly establishes that their relationship is based on attraction rather than just friendship.Wolverine wrote: Also from watching the movies, it's always assumed that Swan and Mercy have a romantic relationship. And Mercy was the love interest, that was her reason for being in the film. She was originally gonna end up with Fox, but Walter Hill changed it so she'd end up with Swan because there was more 'chemistry' between the actors.
And not only does he give her the corsage, but they talk briefly about taking off together. And the look they give each other just before the end credits roll is definitely a romantic one. And to top it all off, the last shot of the film shows them walking off into the sunrise, hand in hand.

Have to agree with CIB here...the intention between Swan and Mercy is definitly romantic. Of course with an open ending like that you can think whatever you wish but I happen to think based on the dialog that Swan and Mercy would be leaving town together to start a new life somewhere.

first of all i dont think jamie will take to kindly to the start of this thread.
secondly to say there was no romantic links between swan and mercy you,ve gotta be blind not to see it.(no offence.)
thirdly as we were mentioning the character of fox.what would be the point of having the name fox if he was built like a bulldog.a fox,s characteristics are speed and stealth.
and last of all for those that say he looks more suited to an accountant.read the original script and you,ll find he was a tough little s.o.b.

Yea they kiss in the tunnel, right before he tells her to go back to wherever it is she came from. They obviously develop some sort of bond towards the end of the movie, but there isn't blatant evidence to show they are a couple. The importance of Mercy is to sort of re-evaluate Swan's life..........mentioned in the thread called 'The Meaning.'

people in general dont go round kissing each other just for the sake of it.within the short space of time theyd known each other swan and mercy had formed a close bond which constituted an animal instinct relationship.example the full on kiss in the tunnel.there was no friendliness about it.

Everybody has friends that are more or less bookish than they are.

I think they picked a good actor for Fox and I think he's the type of guy he'd want for a scout.
Someone that doesn't stick out. Can you imagine Ajax as a scout?
------------
No for obvious reason, he's big and loud. The two things that make him differnt from muscle to scout.
They're two totally differnt jobs.
I guess you could say the oppsite of a muscle is a scout.
