Region 1 is a format for VHS, DVD, CD's, and some audio tapes. Region 1 or NTSC is used in the U.S., Canada, and in Japan. Region 2 is a different format, the PAL System, which is used in Europe and parts of Asia I beleive. Therefore if you are in Europe on vacation and buy a CD or DVD hoping it will play in the U.S., it won't. Unless you have a REGION-FREE DVD Player or CD Player, or you buy a REGION FREE CD or DVD. REGION FREE CD's and DVD's canbe played anywhere, on any format including NTSC and PAL. Hope this helps. Peace.

DVD regionalization has absolutely nothing to do with television broadcast standards. Neither does it, nor has it ever had anything to do with compact discs, MC or VHS tapes.

In my experience:
Region 1 is US and Canada(NTCS)
Region 2 is Europe (PAL)
Region 3 is Asia, and Japan
Region 4 is New Zealand and Australia

at least that is the way some of the movies involving another star I like, turn up, at different sales sites/ebay.
