in the movie vermin gets upset at one point and says coney island must be 50 to 100 miles from here, but its really like 27. witch leaves me to believe that vermin isnt very smart lol

And If you have spent most of your life in a 10 block radius and never have done much traveling around-or driving--you really don't have a concept of distance, or how far/near things are, or how far a mile really is.
Even if he meant it seriously---it is really only a matter of him not figuring how far that would really be. And if you are walking in the middle of the night, lets face it 27 miles might as well be 50-it would seem to take forever.
I mean the dictionary breakdown does not really tell you how far a mile is---in real terms---I had to see it for myself---between two landmarks before it really made sense to me.

It think Vermin was scared and had every right to be so...he'd probably never been out of Coney...and just a short time ago, he was having the time of his life...now he's running for it...I'd doubt he knew it was only 20 miles or so...had no concept of time...I'm sure Cleon didn't tell him...I doubt if he could read a map...so to him it probably did feel that far, even farther...he wasn't stupid, just very scared...
