I was reading a box about the Sicilian Mafia and it was going on about the troubled history of Sicily. Anyway Sicily was once attacked and controlled by an arabic group called The Saracens. As soon as i saw that i wondered if Walter Hill had known about them. What do you lot think?

I'm going to guess that he knew about them. "Saracen" doesn't seem like a name that would just pop into your head. It probably came from that group or one of the other groups with that name.

Hi man, 1st of all... well, excellent topic!!!
So, can u tell me which is the book you read?
Anyway, about Sicilian Saracens Period, I can assure you it was a great one 4 Sicily and Palermo (Saracens Empire Capital and today Region Capital) development... etc...
... now, I think W. Hill would have of given a better "part" to The Saracens gang if he had just known or read about them... as he made 4 istance naming Ismael (from The warriors Movie), Cyrus. In fact he read about Sol Yurick's book source, "Anabasi", where one of the two main characters is Ciro (Cyrus) il Giovane (the "Young").
See ya!!! 8)

I am sure he did his homework, but I think he just picked gang names randomly without having their history in mind.

Yeah, 100% agree!!!
Maybe today, but I'm saying MAYBE!!!, it would be possible... but during those years, and you Americans know better than me what it meant to talk about real gangs life in '70-'80... I think "only cause" they did "The Warriors", it was a very corageous move!!! 8)

Yeah I agree, not only that, but wear a patch on your vest that is a bit similar to that of the most notorious motorcycle gangs in America.

Arabian group? No wonder the Saracens had that Arabian sword in there tag along with the snake. I think this was intentionally put in by Walter hill. So its possible The Saracens could've been a percentage of Arabic mebers too?!

Yeah they maybe could... anyway about their logo (as you know)...

... well the sword is the typical Arabian weapon, but they also have other symbols... not the snake.
I think W. Hill put also a snake, cause this way the logo seems very "aggressive"... I mean a snake biting a sword!!! COOL!!! 8)
Anyway I'd like to say again that IMO W. Hill maybe knew (yeah, why not) about the Saracens (and Arabian history)... but if he had deeply read an exact hystorical Saracen event, I think he'd have given a better part to the Saracen gang in his script!!! 8)
By the way, 2 "Saracens" links:

You know they would of been a good gang to have had more screen time in the film.
