The thing is, they just appear shocking enough in comparison to the other gangs. Most of the other gangs limit themselves to matching jackets e.g. Moonrunners, Eliminators, Panzers, Warriors. The Furies had full-on uniforms, hid their faces in a way that their agitated snarls were emphasised by their makeup and the brute strength in their expert handling of weapons. You could say the same thing about the Hi-Hats but the Hi-Hats weren't in the movie that much were they?

Intimidation and Attitude. The Turnbull's were up for a fight, the Orphans were too (eventually) as were The Punks. But The Furies lull you into a false sense of security because at first you see just one, and it pans around to show all of them then you think, who the hell are these guys? They look scary, but it only works when they are a team.
