yes the price of tokens and everything else was cheaper back then...$4.00 can only get you 2 rides on the subway imagine that same amount at the time you can get more rides...however the city was going thru a tough time during those few years (as it can be seen with the conditions of the subways) no one seemed to care and the mayor didn't do such a good job trying to clean up the city...i believe that he tried to get help from President Carter and he refused (i saw this in a documentary awhile back so if my facts aren't straight anybody can jump in and correct them)...and what was the person at the token booth supposed to do...he/she can't necessarily run out of there and try to chase them...to many barriers...plus most people were scared of the gang members...one example was the woman holding on to her purse while a gang passed by who were heading to the conclaveGramercyRiff99 wrote: In 1979, subway fare was only 50 cents. According to my handy math skills, that's equivalent to about a dollar fifty today. Still cheaper, but remember that the subway was falling apart back then. Remember also that back then, a dollar was equal to about three dollars now. Simple answer: inflation. Long answer... inflation.
Nine tokens please. That'll be $4.50

It goes to show you how there is no more rich, middle, and poor class. As of now there is only the rich, and the poor, no more in between. It makes you wonder how far the future will seep into a dark abyss of hell, that we already live in. Its a real shame how we can no longer live comfortable anymore. There was a time in the early 70's were $5 could actually get you through the day. You could have a small meal, go to the movies, get tokens for transportation, and still have a little bit change left over. Sure the world always had its problem, but now were at the point, were it no longer matters if you are a hard working person just trying to make a living. Now we are at the brink of becoming homeless even with a job and education. I hope our society can just rise from this primordial ooze of decay, and find some salvation.
