"what is it about this movie?"

Post by SoldierHeavyMuscle »

ok, let's look at this rationaly for a second, what's the appeal of this movie that attracts us so? the acting is ok, (that's all!) the violence is good, but not overly violent, there's a million other movies that have twice the violence. there is no great cinematography, it's actually kinda gritty lookin, soundtrack is pretty tough though, but is that enough to warrant this kinda devotation? probably not. so what is it? i think it comes down to the story, it's a great adventure story, even if you are not of that lifestyle. and don't think very highly of gang-members. i am pretty sure we have all put ourselves in their story in our own minds many times! i have, and if you have any kind of imagination you have too! and let's face it, the characters are hero's urban heroes, modern hero's even. (at the time.) the movie itself is part reality, part fantasy. i grew up in gang neighborhood's in the 70' and 80's and trust me gang's didn't dress up the way they did in the warriors. bandanna's, certain pant's, usually baggies. certain color shoes or shoe-laces. baseball hat's. no real gang's would want to bring that much attention to themselves. the gang structure in the movie is pretty sound however, as far as rank's, ideal's, roles within the gang.(that's why that first deleted scene is so important to this movie.) but there's just something about it. i still think it's the greatest movie ever, i maybe am biased, i was 11 when this movie came out, and it was a big deal in our neighborhood at the time. kinda like hero's we could kinda identify with, ya know not from a history book, like real people, people we even knew. what do you think??

When it comes to entertainment, the general public has no idea why some things are popular and other aren't. Examples: reality tv, britney spears, atkins diet. How the hell did these blow up?
Why do I like the Warriors? it has all the good stuff a movie needs in proper doses. No melodrama, no barbie doll girls, not too much bloodshed or swearing, and my persnal favorite, sexy men with nice tummies. And it offers a bit of fantasy along w/all those.

I was just thinking that the other day. I watched it a few days in a row and can't get enough of it. It's like the old Star Trek episodes for me, I can watch them over and over non stop.

Ever notice how giddy Ajax is right before Swan throws the molitov cocktail? it's hilarious.

I was looking for a blooper with the bag that Rembrandt carries but he keeps it slung over his right shoulder the whole movie.

Hey it's a cool movie!!

Personally nostalga plays a big part in my love of the movie. Sneaking in to see the movie when it first came out, watching it in the 80s on cable, etc.

The filming locations are the best.

Can't go wrong with New York and the Subway!

Agree with you there on the locations, jamie. NYC in the late 70s was an exciting if dirty place. President Ford to city "Drop Dead", Reggie Jackson in the Bronx, blackouts, Son of Sam, CBGB emerging punk scene. You could almost believe no one went out at night and these gangs took over.

I hear this all the time, but I don't know myself 'cause I wasn't born til '81. But some people say '79 was the end of an era, of the freestyle type of ( whatever), maybe that plays a big part in the movie also? This film couldn't fly in any other time, that's for sure.

What is it indeed. I have been hooked on this film for many years. It's actually a nice story about taking what you have for granted and having hope for the future, but is alos just very, very cool. This sort of cool cannot be created, or emulated. I cringe at the thought of a 'remake'.
It's just the greatest Movie ever made ... end of story.

For me personally, soe of the reasons include that I'm born and raised in NYC and am a huge subway fan, so that's a good deal of it for me. But so much more makes this film special.

It's the perfect example of something where the whole/sum is just so much greater than the parts. Sometimes something happens where magic is being created, and you don't really know it until after the fact, that's what happened with The Warriors. Let's face it, this movie could have easily have been nothing but a huge piece of garbage. But instead, The Warriors is very intelligent and a very "deep" movie if one chooses to look at it that way, especially with the history of the themes from what was it, the Greek stuff. Not to mention the action!

Heck it even foreshadowed the way just about every major action videogame in the future woud be played, where the "hero" would have to battle level after level until finally finishing the game.

The dialogue is also just incredible - can anyone even name a movie as quotable as this?? It's like almost every darn line can be quoted in a cool way by the fans.

And the cinematography is just incredible - so many great dramatic camera shots and techniques. I love films but I am not a filmmaker so it's hard for me to articulate it, but I know when great filmmaking is at work. The Warriors is a great piece of filmmaking.

Just for the heck of it, I'll mention another film that could have been garbage but instead is along the same lines as The Warriors, it has intelligent themes and is an underrated classic. It's not filmed as nicely as The Warriors but it's a great one still. It's called "Massacre At Central High," made in '77 I believe, anyone ever see it?
Big Cyrus. He was gonna run the whole city...what crap that was.
