A Question for all of you in the NYC..

Post by Ace »

Here's a question for all you soldiers in NYC---According to the game manual, the Orphan's turf in somewhere in the Bronx called Tremont. Is this place as dumpy nowadays as it appears in the movie? The only reason I ask (yeah, it's kinda' dumb) is because I grew up in a dumpy little town in PA called Tremont.

Any info would be appreciated, suckas! :D

Yeah, Tremont is pretty dumpy. I've only been through there a few times, but its more or less as you see it in the movie.

As far as I know, no parts of the film were filmed in the Tremont section, and The Orphan's scenes were filmed in Brooklyn, not The Bronx (which I also showed when I pointed out a street-sign color error here a month ago).

I live in Pelham Bay, which is only a minute or two by car to the Tremont section. It is not that bad there at all, not quite up to beautiful and gorgeous on the whole (although some streets there definitely are, especially at the water) but it's not so bad at all, some streets are really nice there. It doesn't even touch some other Bronx sections for being crappy. In one big Tremont section they are ripping up streets for repair so that doesn't look too pretty. But all in all the Tremont section is not a bad place to live at all, pretty nice.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn but I live in the Bronx, and while there are some "bad" parts of the Bronx looks-wise, there are also many, many parts that range from very nice, to simply gorgeous where you have to be a millionaire to afford virtually. Plus, it depends on how one looks at things too. For instance, I live in a nice part of the Bronx, Pelham Bay area is known for that. But if you are a hardcore country-person who thinks the sight of an elevated subway track makes everything automatically a slum, then you are not going to be won over.

The Bronx can be a mean place in some sections, like all the boroughs have their sections. The Bronx also has some sections that look like total hell (no thanks to the people living there that do nothing to help upkeep where they live, no pride). But The Bronx is definitely a cool place to live IMO, as is anywhere in New York City (well, except Staten Island LOL).

Putting The Orphans in the Tremont section makes no sense. The nearest subway line is the 6, my line, and it just doesn't jell with the movie. They should have put The Orphans where they belong, on the west side of The Bronx, not the east side where Tremont is.

Does the game list any subway stations there? That would make The Orphans' main station the Westchester Square station on the 6, which Tremont Ave crosses.

I had been thinking about this too. Living in the UK I only know The Bronx by repute. Is it really a very tough area? For example, would a tourist be ill-advised to venture there? I looked up the internet to see how it was described and really there was nothing to reinforce the usual reputation.

Aside from The Warriors, Death Wish 3 was also set in The Bronx if I recall correctly - but was actually filmed in London!

I actually found myself in the Leitchenburg area of Berlin earlier this year which has a reputation of being "a stronghold for Neo-Nazis and skinheads" (according to my guide book) and was a bit nerve-wracking after dark although I didn't actually have or see any trouble.

It literally depends on where you are going. Every borough has sections I wouldn't go through alone at night, and feel uncomfortable going through in the daytime even. But NYC is now the safest big city in the United States statistically. But that doesn't mean one shouldn't use their head at all times.

As far as The Bronx goes, "The Bronx" definitely has that tough legend to live down, many even still refer to it as "The Bronx Zoo" (because the huge real Bronx Zoo is up here). But it really is just like any other borough in that some sections are 'safer' than others.

I was talking to a girlfriend who lives in San Diego for instance who comes to NYC once a year. She was a little surprised when I told her that it's not a good idea to walk through Central Park in Manhattan at night, especially for a girl, alone.

My experiences with NYC crime have been almost nil. The only one was actually in 1974, when I stupidly rode my bike off my block near a small park with a bad rep at the time, and 4 kids jumped me and stole it. The same thing happened to my older brother's bike at that time too, at the same park. But I haven't been the victim of NYC crime since then.

It's odd to say, but it helps if you look confident. If some scary characters are walking towards you, it's best to keep your head up, looking straight ahead, maybe even squint your eyes slightly to look like you aren't scared. Sounds silly but you do what you gotta do. Crooks tend to mug/jump people who look scared and seem to be easily intimidated. If you look confident, who's to say you don't have a gun on you to fight back?

Sorry for the long reply lol. It's just a NYC reality. It's a safe place in general but it's always best to use your head.

Well, I've visited NYC and I didn't get jacked or anything. I even donated money to a struggling artist.
(I have no idea if he really used it for anything worthwhile)

But, I had fun. I visited Coney Island for the Warriors flashbacks.
I would visit, but I wouldn't just visit and not know where to go. Stuff like that can get you down the wrong streets at the wrong time.
You know?

Correction!!!

Augh I totally messed up here folks. Last night I was thinking, "wait, I got that wrong..."

Tremont IS indeed on the west side of the Bronx, I totally got my Bronx sections all mixed up. There's so many sections in all the boroughs sometimes I do that. And yes, the Tremont section definitely isn't the prettiest or safest place in the Bronx. The funny thing is, like much of the Bronx, and in the other boroughs too, you literally cross a certain street or two and the slum turns into a section with million-dollar homes.

So I had to correct myself here. The section I was describing above was NOT Tremont after all! Hey, I was born in Brooklyn!! :)

Haha no excuse. But consider myself corrected by me!
