Why Start?

Post by adam88 »

Ok everyone, I was contemplating on this for a long time.  Now I always wondered, that since the essence of the warriors always seemed to be of a gang with the aura of an old soul.  My question is, do you ever think that the reason the warriors started their gang was of a reason far greater then simple survival?  I mean, I feel as if that these were characters who wanted so much more in life, but had to make do with what they had?  I get this feeling that they didn't start the gang for the heck of it, like others did.  I wonder, perhaps they were in it for their own personal reasons.  Perhaps Rembrandt had a talent for art, but lived in an environment that was not encouraging.  Maybe he was an orphan that was not properly taken care of, and ran the streets worried more about living that what his potential could give him.  So his only solution was to join a group of misfits who had a common bond.  Maybe Ajax had a shadowy past, and was running away from his demons.  He has a "skeleton in his closet", and is always on the run, and some how being a part of the warriors was just another form of escape, which is why he's always so angry.  For all we know, Cleon could have been someone who wanted a better life, but his environment caused him to rebel against society.  Maybe he lived around corrupt cops, un-carring teachers, and abusive parents, as well as other gangs, forcing him not to pay attention to a career, but rather a life of crime.  Maybe the same goes for Swan, who wanted to reach for the starts, but for some reason something in life held him back, caused him in a situation in which being a warriors was something he could not avoid.  This is just a few examples.  Maybe they were all misfits who were somehow not given a chance in society, and could not touch that dream, so they started a faction that hopefully would take them as far on an adventure as possible, and go where ever, the jouney takes them.
What do you think?

I think the one of the big reasons for the Warriors, and many other gangs forming is that they are all mostly poor kids from the ghettoes, brought up in bad high crime environments and in most cases with no real prospects for their futures. The world the Warriors takes place in doesn't exactly suggest that these guys come from a positive environment, and the wider world has probably written them off as deadbeats and no hopers. Even before joining a gang, most of them were probably getting into at least minor trouble with the law, so are used to having the cops come down on them, and that's before thinking about the cops who'd target them just because they're poor kids from the ghettoes.

So groups of kids from the same neighbourhoods band together and form into a gang, seeing it as perhaps their only real shot at making something of themselves, earning respect from the world and also gaining a sense of pride and belonging by being a member of the gang. Maybe they had older relatives who mentored them in the ways of gang life, or maybe they started off like Rembrandt, as junior members working their way up. Maybe they just saw their parents or other local adults living in their areas, leading dull lives, either unemployed or stuck in dead end jobs with no real chance to get out, and decided that this wasn't a life they wanted to live.

Well look around at pictures of New York at the time, many of the locales were the finest examples of hell-on-earth - poor conditions, filthy,  as Mercy described it - who can exist in such squalor?  But people were living - and for the gangs like The Warriors, it was likely a way for kids to meet and formalize a way of getting along while living amongst the down-trodden.
What's the matter - goin' faggot?

I was just reading your comment,Yids, and you had me thinking about a movie
I was just watching called

And since you were talking about New York in the Late 70's perhaps you will love to check this out,and it's
Backstory and attention to detail, was what grabbed me .In the summer of ‘77, New York was a city in crisis. Terrorized by the Son of Sam serial killer, divided by a bitter mayor’s race and devastated by rampant arson and looting following a paralyzing citywide blackout, the Big Apple found renewed hope and inspiration in the on-and-off field exploits of baseball’s most storied franchise, The New York Yankees. Although deeply embroiled in an explosive three-way power struggle between meddlesome owner George Steinbrenner, combative manager Billy Martin and egocentric superstar slugger Reggie Jackson, the Yankees managed to overcome their personality clashes and capture their first World Series championship in 15 years and, in doing so, helped win the hearts of New Yorkers struggling to recover from the most tumultuous year in the city’s history. And it's based on the best selling novel, this inspiring 8-part miniseries is jam-packed with gripping drama and excitement.

Thanks guys, sorry I haven't been around latley.  You know, work and college have really been stressing me.  I didn't even notice that Mike posted on here.  I actually do have a social life everyone , I just simply like to express my passion from time to time, you know when I am bored.  In fact I am actually posting this in my college library right now.  So I do have a career.  I mean I even traveled to Egypt, rode on horses near the pyramids with my family, as we looked under the stars.  Now, how many people can say that.  But its cool

So Mike, hows work and everything been treating you?  I hope no ones has been busting your chops latley my friend  :)
