Fox (Waites) was suppose to be the main character and not Swan. Walter Hill and Waites didnt see eye to eye so their was a huge argument and Waites left the set. This is just what I remember reading from somewhere, but I cant remember where.

why does thomas g waites (fox) leave?
i have a STRONG feeling about the reason why....
the actor Tom (Fox) wants to have a relationship with Mercy in the movie, so he probably encouraged Walter to re-write the script, but he didn't do it so Swan is Mercy's "love" interest..
clue - why is Fox holding Mercy with his hand running around in the station before he was killed? is the love interest between both already developed that we don't know about? who knows if the film ends up on the cutting room floor..... why is there a production photo of them together? so many questions are left unanswered...
the ending credits on the new DVD has no mention of Tom, but he is only mentioned breifly in one of the featurettes by Walter Hill. Vermin, Snow and Cowboy have no information at all for the featurettes but it's nice of Deborah (Mercy) for bringing up Rembrandt and some other Warriors fan...

I do wish Cleon has more film time to see more of his character. (the deleted opening scene isn't enough!)

but something tell's me, that that STRONG feeling, you have is something that an INSIDER who either, worked, on the film, or was in the film, would have!
i got the script, but i might not have the LAST version of it, right joe!
supposedly, they saw the chemistry between michael beck, and deborah van valkenburg, and then they changed the script! and that's when waites took the walk!
but what do i know??

why does thomas g waites (fox) leave?
From the LOOK magazine interview, I gathered that---Tom was not showing any screen presence, and Michael WAS showing LOTS of screen charisma---
the chemistry with Mercy was secondary to the fact that everyone's eyes were on Michael's abilities, and Tom was becoming lost in the background.
Tom wasn't showing chemistry with either the rest of the group or Mercy. They were counting on him to "stand out" more within the group.
and Michael was becoming the lead by default. Cause he was better.

Nah. Waites was probably just bad at making out, so he left rather than be embarassed...
When we get there; that's when we've made it.

It is interesting how Fox, after he tells Mercy off and she says to him how she's not a whore, gives her the "once over" with his eyes up and down really quick before he walks off, checking her out.
Big Cyrus. He was gonna run the whole city...what crap that was.

I was really surrpised to learn from the script that The Fox was supposed to be such a major part of the movie. I mean no offesne, but I really think the role was miscasted. Mr. Waites really didn't have charisma, at least not in that role, and I honestly think things turned out for the best.
I do wonder if the character will play a much larger role in the videogame.

Re: why does thomas g waites (fox) leave?
I think he left because walter hill and thomas g waites had an arguement and yes you are right he was supposed to have a relationship with mercy but i am not quite sure what caused the arguement.
Im a little teapot short and stout
Re: why does thomas g waites (fox) leave?
Apparently, the argument was caused by Walter Hill's decision to 'make' a relationship in the movie between Swan and Mercy, instead of Fox and Mercy. By doing that, Fox has lost his 'place' in the movie, in other words, he was not that important character any more. Unhappy with the size of his role, he decided to leave.ajax the warrior wrote: I think he left because walter hill and thomas g waites had an arguement and yes you are right he was supposed to have a relationship with mercy but i am not quite sure what caused the arguement.
At least that's what I've heard.
